The Hyperlapse Challenge #2 - 2025 - Town Centres - Winner Announced

You are invited to create a hyperlapse using a drone at least 15 seconds long on the subject of Town Centres ( In Or Around ),

The Challenge will run from 12th April 00:01 to 21:00 on the 10th of May 21.00 hours. Your hyperlapse must be taken within that period. Proof may be required in case of dispute

The challenge will run for 28 days and is open to all GADC members. Once closed a poll open to all will determine the ’ first, second & third place winners ‘.

What is a Hyperlapse?

A hyperlapse video is a time-lapse video that uses a moving camera to create a sense of speed and movement. It’s a creative and visually striking technique that combines a series of still images into an accelerated video sequence.

How is a hyperlapse video created?

1. The camera captures a series of still images at different intervals.
2. The camera moves between each photo.
3. The images are combined to create a seamless, accelerated video sequence.

How is a hyperlapse video different from a time-lapse video?

A hyperlapse video uses different angles to create a sense of movement and speed.
A time-lapse video is traditionally shot on a tripod or on a motion control slider, so the camera stays in almost exactly the same spot.

You can also create a hyperlapse in most video editors using footage shot at normal speed footage. There are many tutorials on video sharing sites showing how to do this for specific editors.

How to enter

Create a hyperlapse - both the subject and the camera viewpoint must be moving throughout the video. The speed of subject motion must be a minimum 3x normal

Host your video on YouTube or Vimeo.

Create a post in this thread with THIS IS MY ENTRY in capitals as your first line. Then add, on separate lines:
• Location
• Time & Date
• Aircraft used
• Add anything that might be of interest if you wish

Copy and paste the url of your video hosting onto a separate line in your post with a blank line above and below

The competition will run from 00:01 Saturday 12th April till 21:00 Saturday 10th May. Shortly after the challenge closes a poll, open to all GADC members, will be open until 21:00 on Monday May 12th after which the winners will be declared.

All flights are the sole responsibility of the individual conducting them. Each competitor must abide by the drone code and adhere to the limitations and restrictions imposed upon them by aviation law, the aircraft being used and the qualifications they hold. If a flight is undertaken in a restricted zone proof of permission having been granted is required.

Enjoy, Be Creative & Most Of All Have Fun !

Ooh could be a bit of a challenge for me. Here in Derby, we have a pair of peregrine falcons nesting on the cathedral. What sort of space should I give them with the drone ? It’s a fairly big city centre so I’d have no problems staying 400m away from the cathedral, but obviously you just know some Karen or Ken will spot the drone and complain that I’m disturbing a pair of falcons ( even if I was a mile away )

When the subject of town centres was pulled out that’s why up above in the post I made sure it was mentioned / option

As maybe some don’t feel comfortable being to close to town for what ever reasons but still possible without throwing yourself in a situation one or yourself may not be happy with hence the choice, as long as the subject is in view that’s all that matters :slightly_smiling_face:

I don’t mind flying in our city centre, but what sort of berth should I give the falcons ?

I’ve been looking this up out of curiousity, I couldn’t find anything concrete but I did find this article  Destygmatising Drones - British Ornithologists' Union

The people. It’s all the strange people. :fearful:

That’s interesting. I know drones have been used to survey waders on salt marsh, however I avoided using my drone near a water tower due to Peregrine in situ (plucking a pigeon) and didn’t want to disturb it. Seems that they’re not as sensitive as I assumed.

There everywhere !

Quick question, can the hyper lapse be edited as a series of clips or does it all need doing in one take ? ( I’ve messaged the committee but am awaiting a reply.

For the previous challenge “they” allowed @JoeC a multi-clip hyperlapse. So I think you’re good.

I recently looked at the Salisbury Cathedral website and came across a section dealing with birds. Apparently there are Peregrine Falcons there who laid 4 eggs in Mid March. From this point, there should be a 6-7 week period of growth before they fledge and leave the nest. In theory a drone flight in reasonable proximity to the main building shouldn’t really present a risk after mid May. I would imagine the same would be true of Derby. I wouldn’t go anywhere near them whilst they are still at the nest.

I gave the cathedral a wide berth Patrick. More through the fear of my drone being mistaken for prey by the falcons.:wink:

Continuing my slightly annoying habit of multiple entries (I think I have an issue with premature submission  )…

THIS IS MY ENTRY

Cromer, Norfolk

DJI Air 3S

I was in Cromer last night for something else entirely and just brought the drone on a whim. Sent it up for a few photos and when I saw how the town and pier looked at night, thought I had to try a hyperlapse. Unfortunately this decision came towards the end of my battery life, so the result is a little shorter than I’d like!
