The iconic twisted spire of St. Mary and All Saints Church in Chesterfield

Here is a bit of my drone footage of Chesterfield, Derbyshire.
I captured the iconic twisted spire of St. Mary and All Saints Church which was built in the late 13th century. The 228-foot-high spire leans, spectacularly, nine feet from centre !
The Town Hall building at the start is situated on Rose Hill and was completed in 1938.

The weather wasn’t great but made the best of it.

That does lean as well I’m guessing that wasn’t in the design …

I couldn’t get the vid to work in the grey arrows website it was asking me to sign in?
I searched for comedyhunter on YouTube and found it there.
I’ve got to say the flying is pretty excellent, very smooth indeed.
Funky building too.
Nice one

My old home town.

Local myth says the devil was passing over Chesterfield and stopped for a rest on the spire, when he heard a virgin was getting married in the church, twisting the spire with his tail as he had too see with his own eyes.

Actual truth, the builders used green timber when it was built, which warped under the weight of the lead.

Also, as an interesting fact, that spire sits there under it’s own weight, it is not secured in anyway to the church.

Thanks for that, I’m guessing also that it has to have regular checks to make sure all is ok & safe ?

I know there was a scientific study in 2000, they said there was no danger to the structure but that it was still twisting and leaning since it was last studied.

nicely done!
I wouldn’t have ventured a flight in that weather, but it looks good.
The mist adds to it.

yes by nine feet from centre !
no, its because they unseasoned wood and the weight of the lead made it contort.

Or…

Terrific control of the drone, which one? Not sure I would be brave enough to fly over so many buildings and still maintain line of sight. Love the dramatic music, well done
