Just got back from a 2 week trip to Ireland, the 1st week of which was a 60 minute drive South West of Cork – it’s the shots from this week that I’ve posted below showcasing the diverse landscapes of this breathtaking Irish coastline (week 2 from the Copper Coast to follow!)
The trip was a great opportunity to explore West Cork, a region famous for its rugged coastlines, rich history, and dramatic, sweeping peninsulas along the Wild Atlantic Way. For a drone pilot, this area is nothing short of paradise. The shifting weather, dramatic Atlantic swells, and perfectly preserved historical landmarks offer endless opportunities to capture the intersection of land, sea, and sky.
One of the most thrilling locations to fly was the iconic Old Head of Kinsale, a stunning, narrow headland protruding into the Atlantic Ocean. Framed by a world-class golf course and its famous striped lighthouse, capturing it as low-hanging sea fog rolled across the cliffs created a hauntingly beautiful, ethereal atmosphere.
Further west along the coast, the white-walled compound of Galley Head Lighthouse provided a striking contrast against the jagged rock formations and crashing white surf below. Nearby, the famous conical silhouette of the Baltimore Beacon stood watch over the entrance to Baltimore Harbour. Perched on a steep cliffside, it serves as a spectacular focal point for wide-angle panoramic shots that contrast the deep turquoise waters with the dramatic patchwork of green fields stretching inland.
Moving inland from the cliffs, West Cork’s rich ancient history reveals itself beautifully from an aerial perspective. Flying over Knockdrum Ringfort, a prehistoric stone fort near Castletownshend, the drone revealed a perfect circular geometry invisible from the ground, beautifully positioned against a backdrop of rolling pastures and a distant lake. Not far away, the striking, gothic ruins of Castlefreke emerges from a dense canopy of trees, its historic stone walls and imposing towers providing a majestic subject.
Whether capturing the reflective stillness of winding estuaries at sunrise or tracking the dramatic cliffs of the Atlantic edge, West Cork proved to be an unforgettable drone photography destination. I’ll be going back!
