Bit of a different video here, Ive used a combination of my drone footage and my dashcam footage as evidence that this traffic island needs the lines repainting. I only flew it over for a couple of mins and captured two cars in that time going over into the wrong lane.
I use this roundabout (traffic island) every day and Im shocked by how many times I see cars drifting across lanes, had several near misses with cars wandering into my lane. So I thought I would make this video so you can clearly see the problem and why its happening.
Got to agree with Darren - renewing the white lines may help in the event of an insurance claim but it ain’y going to fix piss poor driving - the number of drivers straight lining roundabouts is on the increase.
Actually either of the right two lanes could legally take the 3rd or 4th exits.
Why? Because the right hand lane doesn’t say right turn only. It would need to show the ability to not exclude going all the way around, which is why it doesn’t say right turn only
The road marks must say right turn only to be enforceable - which is why a turn right lane at lights is only enforceable with such wording.
However I have seen far worse lines on the roads - and I would say I am as guilty of the next person for cutting across a roundabout if nobody it to my right.
But perhaps better road markings and a turn right indicator on the roundabout in lane three?
It’s not the only badly laid out roundabout in Derby though. Spider Island ( a few miles further along Ozzy Rd ) is just as bad. The one at the bottom of Harvey Rd in Derby can be a nightmare at times. Don’t get me started about the one just past Pride Park Stadium ( where CostCo is ) controlled by traffic lights, but with the poor access to CostCo , this island often becomes gridlocked .
Go in the back way, from Chequers Road (past Inchcape /John Pye/etc.). Still plenty of queueing to do in Costco car park, but avoids the nightmare roundabout on the Wyvern.
Disclaimer: I am not a Traffic Engineer, I am not a Highway engineer this is not engineering advice.
If someone was an ex-Traffic Signal and ex-Highway Engineer and ex-expert witness on the subject they may suggest the follow to you and your local council (assuming they are the traffic and highway authority) …
Yes white lane marking is the cheapest form of traffic management - keep the marking around the roundabout and concentric. Also change the angle at the stop line away from the centre of the roundabout. The island is also angle (with the full green traffic signal) is also angles towards the roundabout which is making the problem worse.
Split the island on the approach and having full green is an abomination. Could have green arrows for each directions.
We have the same thing here and it’s a new road ( bypass ) but it’s not the roundabout or the lines it’s just bad driving , honestly it’s like this lot here have never seen a roundabout before , drivers today have no patience and no manners .
