The Quiraing, Skye

A still but grey day allowed us to explore the Quirang with the AVATA, I didn’t quite get the footage I wanted - I lost the video feed at one point - and with the terrain somewhat difficult for us to traverse we had to fly at the edge of VLOS to capture anything, so I had to take the exploring a lot easier than I would have liked.

Still, it gives a sense of place, and if it inspires me to return - or another to do it proper justice - then it was worthwhile…

@AlbionDrones Looked great to me Suzanne, even with the pesky swirly trans :face_with_spiral_eyes: :joy:

I must say, considering your style and footage in rocky terrain I’ve always thought your signal super good. Strange as this was more open than usual?

The issue was the distance, abotu 1/3 of the way to the rock formations th path goes into a deep gully, and you have to scramble across wet and slippery rocks, which are sloping and has a drop beneath - and given we had a 77yr old MiL with us it was a no, so we retreated back to the level ground and flew from there, with strobes mounted for visibility…

The Air 3 flying higher up was no issue, but the AVATA was struggling when I turned upslope - which effectively took it around a corner, cutting the signal strength… The one extended flight up stops exactly where the goggles transmission stopped, and I had to carefully fly backward a few feet to regain visuals, putting me off from trying to get any closer - which was my original plan… Next time we shall walk across the top of the cliffs and fly from above, which should allow us a bit better VLOS and transmission strength…

On the first AVATA flight over I also had it limited to 400ft, hence when approaching the stack it didn’t go higher than the base, so then I had to reset the height limit, which cost time and meant I only had a minute or so before I had to return to the TOAL point…

Perhaps I should have flown the AIR3 a bit more, rather than one pass in either direction, but we were being eaten alive by midges and the MiL wanted to get back to the car…

@AlbionDrones The ups and downs of flying a drone (literally ). I get the midges thing Suzanne, our last trip to Scotland was swarming with them in Glencoe, but we were prepared and had midge nets! You totally look a right twat with them on but anything to foil the little buggers!

You get on with your MiL then  :smirk:

Yeah, we had 2 midge nets, and guess who didn’t get one…

I get on with her ok, but she is hard work, I can cope with about a week, but any longer than that and the stupidity begins to grate on me… She is extremely gullible and has views that are outdated, but she is hubby’s only remaining parent, so we take her away at least once a year and she comes to us for Xmas… And I am not allowed to put her in positions that she may slip off a rock ledge whatsoever, I have been told

Thanks, I shall do my best, have perhaps enough footage for another 3 location on Skye, then a showreel, and I shall need to get out and do some flying for some more footage…

Thank you kindly

Thank you for watching and for the kind words

Another great video @AlbionDrones. It makes me tempted to buy an Avata but with the money I’ve already spent on drones, cameras, ebikes and other gadgets I can’t see my long-suffering wife accepting ‘it’s just one more drone’ as a good enough reason :frowning:.

Thanks Paul, yeah, there is always that point of justification, when the heart always says Required drones = N+1, but the bank manager or other half cannot agree with the extra equipment… I have been fortunate enough to reach the point of owning 3 drones, I can’t see that number increasing, much as I would like it to…

Hubby has good vision, mine is better, but as I was FPV I couldn’t see it… However, when flying at distance I fit strobes, on the AVATA that’s 2, one red and one green on either side, which makes it visible for a lot further - I use the Strobbon Cree that we get a discount on, an they are excellent…

…not heard that phrase since I retired - a work colleague would come out with it quite often - he was a northern gentleman too

Hubby quite often says I have eyes like a bog house rat, and its true…

I have better than 20/20 vision - slight astigmatism - but with my glasses on I can read the 7-point text at the side of the eye test form that tells you the size of the font! I can easily see the MINI3 Pro at 1500ft, and the AIR3 at further than that - and if I put a few strobes on it then further again…
