The Quirang, Trotternish, Skye - Added to Iconic Landscapes and Ancient Sites in Scotland

I have just added this to the map of places to fly your drone at Drone Scene:

Land owner permission not required.

The iconic Quirang - a landslip that is still moving towards the sea - on the Trotternish Peninsula on Skye. Lots of amazing rock formations and stunning views over to the mainland and on to Lewis and Harris - if the weather plays ball and the visibility is good.

The site is an SSSI, for the geology, and although Golden Eagle are in the area, we found it was reasonably safe to fly.

For our flight we parked at the cemetary and walked up onto the hills, staying outside the SSSI while also affording good VLOS.

Lots of walkers, so be aware of them and do not overfly unles your drone is sub 250gm.

The originator declared that this location was not inside a Flight Restriction Zone at the time of being flown on 23/10/2023. It remains the responsibility of any pilot to check for any changes before flying at the same location.

here is one of the best locations ive flown in , The Quirang Skye.

Hi I’m planning on using my drone here (Dji mini 4 pro). I’m a little confused about SSSI. Do you have to be outside the area marked on the map as SSSI to fly?

Hello SK,

You need to understand what th SSSI is about, so take a look at the link in Drone Scene and read it, then you can make an informed decision…

The Quirang SSSI is about the land, not about wildlife, same as the Old Man of Storr, which means you need to stay clear of damaging the landscape. Be aware though that there are Golden Eagles in the area, so keep VLOS and clear the area if they get close…

I flew here today. Weather wasn’t great, but it’s still a spectacular place.

It is an amazing place, did you get to Duntulm Castle as well? Or Lealt Falls, and the Old Man of Storr?

Went to Lealt Falls, but didn’t have time to fly the drone there today. The Old Man of Storr is probably beyond our collective family walking abilities, but we’ll see!

TBH you dont need to get all the way there, take the right-hand longer and gentler path, and fly from the bottom of the stairs, you will have good VLOS - or get there at 5am and fly from the coffee shop car park and use the zoom…
