Twmbarlwm Hillfort - Added to Castles and Fortifications in Caerphilly, Wales

I have just added this to the map of places to fly your drone at Drone Scene:

Twmbarlwm, also known as Twm Barlwm, Twyn Barlwm or locally known as "the Twmp" (translation: hump) is a hill situated 2 km (1.2 mi) to the northeast of Risca in South Wales. It is 419 m (1,375 ft) high and is a well-known landmark throughout the region.

It commands extensive views across the Motorway 4 corridor and out over the Bristol Channel.

At the top of the hill, near its summit, are the remains of an Iron Age hillfort, believed to have been built by the Silures, the Celtic tribe that inhabited the area before and during Roman times.

There is also a Roman signal point and a substantial Norman motte-and-bailey castle incorporated into the eastern end of the for. The area is a scheduled monument.

The originator declared that this location was not inside a Flight Restriction Zone at the time of being flown on 14/01/2026. It remains the responsibility of any pilot to check for any changes before flying at the same location. Landowner permission may be required before taking off.

One of my work colleagues is a direct descendant of the Silures and, as he tells me, explains his dark skin for a person whose lineage is pure Welsh.

Interesting. Mind you, they wouldn’t have needed the dark skin pigmentation to ward off the sun here today - it was -5C when i got there :joy:

My mother was dark-skinned & dark-haired for this reason as well. The Silures were the only British tribe to fight the Romans to a negotiated peace; the others were either defeated outright or submitted voluntarily.

Twmbarlwm is an terrific viewpoint; you can, on a good day, see down to Ilfracombe on the N.Devon coast, north-eastwards to the Malvern Hills, north to the Bannau Brychieniog, and east to the Cotswold escarpment and the Wiltshire Downs beyond.
