So my son is going to register with the CAA and I was going to let him fly my Mini 4 a bit (which I also still use sometimes)
Obviously the drone has to display the registration number etc, is it simply a case of having to swap the numbers over each time? Obviously I can’t have two different numbers on there.
As it’s your drone, it should have your Operator ID label on it. Your son would just need to have a Flyer ID to fly your drone.
Flyer ID not required for the Mini series.
Ah.. good point, in that case it just needs @Bossy 's Operator ID on it.
You are the operator, ie the person who decides who can or cannot fly the drone so you are responsible for the drone hence why yours is the only number required on the drone. Technically your son doesn’t need an operator ID but if he is under 18 he is not eligible for one anyway. As i said before, under sub 250g a flyer id isn’t required. But it shouldn’t be put on the aircraft anyway.
Great thanks folks for the prompt replies, so he doesn’t even need a Flyer ID, perfect. Thanks for all your help.
Might need a flyer ID from January next, but it costs nothing and lasts for 5 years. And you only need to be 13 for the Flyer ID.
Here is the CAA page on children and IDs. It’s the only page I’ve seen that mentions someone only needs a flyer ID if required for the size of drone.
No idea how old your son actually is, @Bossy… but on a more general note about children flying drones, there’s an argument to be made that going through the process of getting a FlyerID (whether technically needed or not) might instil a bit of “this is serious s*%t so take this s@$t seriously”-ness to flying a drone that a parent might not be able to.
In fairness my son is 22 so, no issues there! Sorry, would have been useful for me to mention that earlier!!
It’s like a car registration plate. The car’s reg. number stays the same no matter who is driving it. It is essentially the same with a drone and the Operator ID.
This info is all in the Drone and Model Aircraft Code on the CAA site and take two mins to find and digest it. Ooerator ID is something YOU need but neither of you need a flyer ID unless you’re flying a drone over 250g. Getting a Flyer ID is a good thing to do if you’re into the hobby anyway though…
If your son is sensible then fine. If he is likely to be stupid with it then i would tell him to hus own operator id himself giving him the responsibilty (not you) if a problem comes up. Him flyjng on your OP ID is saying you vouch for his actions.
He’s very sensible, but I think nonetheless I’ll make him get an operator ID anyway as suspect he’ll become addicted!
That makes sense - an Operator ID is £11.99 … a Mini 4 Pro around £950 so about a 1% uplift on your investment !
A bit of a Google says you shouldn’t have more than one Operator ID for a drone.
" No, one drone can only have one operator ID in the UK. The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) requires that anyone responsible for a drone or model aircraft must register as an operator and display their unique operator ID on the drone. While multiple people can fly the same drone, only one person is designated as the operator and responsible for that specific drone.
Here’s why:
- Operator ID is for the responsible party:
The operator ID identifies the person or organization legally responsible for the drone, including its maintenance and safe operation.
- Multiple flyers are possible:
A registered operator can authorize others to fly their drone, but they remain ultimately accountable.
- Flyer ID for competency:
Those who fly the drone, even if they are not the operator, may need a Flyer ID, depending on the drone’s weight and whether it has a camera.
- Operator ID is unique:
Each drone or model aircraft must display the operator ID of the person or organization responsible for it."
Yes that’s fine, thanks. Am going to have just one Operator ID, mine, on the drone and getting him a flyer ID too. Sure it won’t be long before he wants a drone of his own!
Thanks again everyone for all the replies.
