Standing at the mouth of the River Tyne is Tynemouth Lighthouse, one of the most recognisable landmarks along the North East coastline. Built in 1854, the lighthouse was constructed to help guide ships safely towards the entrance of the River Tyne and the busy port of Newcastle.
The lighthouse stands on the North Pier at Tynemouth, which forms part of the extensive breakwater protecting the river entrance from the North Sea. Its prominent position means it has been an important navigational landmark for vessels approaching the Tyne for more than 170 years.
The surrounding area has a strong maritime history, with the River Tyne becoming one of Britain's most important industrial and shipping centres during the 19th and 20th centuries. The lighthouse therefore played an important role in supporting the ships that carried goods, coal and passengers into and out of the river.
Today, Tynemouth Lighthouse remains an iconic feature of the coastline, standing against the North Sea at the end of the pier. These aerial photographs capture the lighthouse from above, highlighting its distinctive structure, the North Pier and the dramatic coastline surrounding the entrance to the River Tyne.
