I was looking into flying a sub-250g drone in Switzerland in the Open category. If I look at the Swiss drone restriction map, it would appear that there are no airspace restrictions on sub-250g drone immediately next to Zurich airport (beyond the general drone regulations), which I find hard to believe. On that map if I click just outside Zurich airport, I see two zones:
- 2199167: CTR ZURICH , “The operation of unmanned aircraft weighing more than 250 g is prohibited from an altitude of 120 m above ground.”
- 2198957: LSZH Zürich, “The operation of unmanned aircraft weighing more than 250 g is prohibited.”
Neither of them say anything about sub-250g drones. So it would appear from this that one can fly a sub-250g drone right outside Zurich airport, with no additional restrictions beyond those which apply anywhere else in Switzerland. That seems surprising - is the data on the map correct?
Guess its no different to any airport anywhere (with 5KM) ?
It is (or appears to be on the map) very different - the difference is between “immediately outside” and “5 km away”. Here right outside the boundary wall of Zurich airport, about 650 metres away from a runway, directly in line with the runway, there appear to be no additional restrictions for a sub-250g drone. That is hard to believe.
Reach out to them, lots of contact details on the map.
Do you really want to fly that close to the airport?
I must admit after looking at the Swiss FRZ map, the wording at Zurich is indeed a little confusing.
I don’t want to fly that close to the airport. My concern is more along the lines of whether that data is correct and can be relied on elsewhere, primarily so that I avoid flying anywhere unsafe. But also so that I don’t miss out flying somewhere I want to which is safe and legal.
It’s the same story with St Gallen airport and Lugano airport as well, not just Zurich.
Yes let me try to contact them.
