Unveiling the Mysteries of Dinorwic Quarry

Hi all, some footage i took of Dinoriwc quarry a few weeks ago.

Dinorwic Quarry, nestled amidst the rugged splendour of Snowdonia National Park in North Wales, near the quaint village of Llanberis, serves as an awe-inspiring testament to both the industrial prowess and geological richness of the region.

Spread across seven hundred acres, Dinorwic Quarry’s imposing presence against the backdrop of ancient, towering mountains symbolizes centuries of human endeavour intertwined with the enduring forces of nature. Once a bustling epicentre of industry, its history is etched into the very rock faces that bear witness to the toil of countless workers who laboured to extract slate from its depths.

Years ago I spent 3 days exploring that site, all the buildings still have a lot of the machinery still in situ. The long building is the old machine shop with all the benches still there, just missing the drive belts. There one hut bit higher up from that called the goats hut, had shoes and tattered cloths from workers still there, people had scribed there names and date of visiting on the walls. It rumoured there’s still a train deep inside the tunnels

Hi Dren, the site is amazing hence it being a UNESCO site. And yes you are correct there are lots of old industrial machinery scattered around the site There used to be lots of the old quarrymen’s boots and caps etc on site However as an unfortunate consequence of more visitors, people have stolen them which is shameful and very disrespectful.

Think it was around 2013 when I visited, started near the cottages in the middle, got a taste of how much climbing was needed. Second day started halfway up from small lane and walking upto top reservoir. Third day walked the inclines stopping of at each level to explore, recently sections have collapsed and I think parts have disappeared. The top reservoir is monitored by security cameras as I found out a few years ago, met a 4x4 coming out to ask what I was doing, showed them my DJI Spark and they just said ok.
It’s shame people feel the need to take stuff, but that’s a sign of the times.
