Wallace Monument, Stirling

Last week, I took a drive to Stirling with the intention of flying my drone up and around the Wallace Monument. I checked before leaving and could find no restrictions on flying there.

When I arrived there, a couple of hours after closing time, I found that there were signs everywhere saying. ‘No Drones’. There were notifications that the Trust who operate the Monument were working with Police Scotland and they had some old navigation orders from 1993 listed as the reasons for not allowing flights.

Looking for advice on this please. Can I just go and fly and tell them to mind their own business? I have all CAA requirements for the drone I use plus £12M public liability insurance.

I don’t want to get into any arguments with people, but I’m not going to be told I can’t fly somewhere if there is no law against it.

TIA

I mentioned the signs here - A couple of hours around Stirling - Photos by Drone - Grey Arrows Drone Club UK

Just don’t take off and land on their property, they don’t own or control the airspace. I took off from the edge of a field behind the monument at the roadside.

Thanks very much, I’ll do just that  When I was there, i did drive around and I found a nice spot to launch from - it was probably the same field you mention. But to be honest, I was in a bit of a foul mood after seeing those signs and so I just headed back home to Ayrshire instead.

Oh and your pics are absolutely amazing! If I was from Stirling I’d be contacting you to make me nice big ones to put up in my house .

Thanks :+1: I’d gone up the week before for a quick recce, that’s when I first saw the signs. There are a lot of double yellow lines on the roads around the monument but about half way along the road behind it (the B998 Hillfoots Road) there is just room for one car off the road.

It was leased and run by Stirling District Tourism until November last year, but I gather it is now run by Stirling Council. So any signs from SDT would now be irrelevant. And I can’t find any online information about the 1993 orders, so I think you are pretty safe if TOAL from somewhere else nearby.

Stirling Council have this page about drone filming at Abbey Craig, but it seems to just rule out TOAL, they don’t seem to have anything legal in place that would prohibit overflying.

Well that’s more confirmation that I can fly thanks  I’ll head back up there soon. Might do the castle while I’m there

If you are going to do the castle too, worth checking out Gowan Hill which is right beside it. Great views across to the castle.

Thanks, great info
