If you are looking to test the ESCs, I believe you can spin them up with only three motors attached, obviously props off. Then swap one of the motors to the esc with a missing motor to test it.
That is one of the reasons indeed… but also wanted to try to get it on air and check that all works.
You can stick almost any motor on if you are just testing functionality 
Yes, I’ll do that for now to test that the esc is all good…
Motor test successful, so nothing burned out apparently, which means it would be nice to get a motor in to fly this thing whilst I wait for the motors to arrive from China.
