Well that didn't go to plan - crashed wing

I am struggling to get this thing to fly. Lauched ok then i thought i had control but down it went.
I did do alll checks before take off inc a false launch to make sure it started .

Oh well off to the shed and the Internet. Need a new canmera cable.

Did you launch it after this? as in shake it to start the motors and then launch it? or did you shake it to start it then disarm and launch it again without shaking it?

also did you fix your lose control horns before this failed launch?

I say this because the “shake n bake” launch isn’t recommended as it plays havoc with the pid loop and gyro.

Shed hobby

yes fixed the horns as if you zoom in you will see the epoxy.
false start then disarm.
its like i lost power as the video just cuts out, (no i didn’t disarm)

sort of similar yesterdays first flight but not as disasterous

had no control from the off.

That first launch, you gave it a shake before throwing it, also with the AR Wing PRO being pretty heavy I’d recommend setting up some idle throttle and a delay I used 10 seconds idle delay (gives me enough time to get myself into a launch position before the motor starts to spin up) once the motor is spinning give it a couple of seconds to reach idle speed then just throw it and auto launch will take care of the rest :+1:t2:

well it’s all glued back together and I’ve ordered the cable from Hobby RC, obviously it’s not going back in the air today. so will have chance to look at those settings
in the second video as it crossed the little bit of water 6 seconds in, I was already on the controls trying to raise the nose, nothing.
I see the shake on the first video, I hadn’t realised I had done that. my concern obviously is lack of control. As in the first video I took control at 10 seconds and immediately lost control, (but I still had video on the way down, but not recording,) yet on the bench and pre flight I have full control.

what mode have you got set for after auto launch? I used to have mine go into return to home after auto launch had finished then into angle mode after I turned off return to home.

Not sure why you’d have no control at all after auto launch

And look how that turned out :person_shrugging:

No that was the problem, I didn’t turn off return to home, I disarmed instead…

Horizon in the top video as that worked at beacon. The bottom vid which was yesterday was angle, because someone said i shouldn’t be in horizon when landing till i was more proficient. As it didn’t work yesterday i changed it back to horizon for today. And we all know how that ended.

Oh this is sad to see :frowning: It’s weird. Have you got enough throttle as it seems to go, then die off, how long have you got auto launch set for? Mine gets to 70/80meteres being stopping and at least 10 seconds of something long. I assume you’re not moving the sticks at all. Auto launch you need to wiggle to get it out of it.

After checking all surfaces, done all the other checks, etc my process is as follows:

  • Put all switches to default natural settings, throttle all the way down
  • Set auto launch switch (if it’s not an always on option, I have it on a switch)
  • Now ARM
  • Set to RTH or loiter (whichever you prefer), you CAN’T DO THIS BEFORE ARMING. I’d pick RTH for now, though make sure you’ve not got it set to land after RTH (maybe that’s what it’s doing?!?!) It’s Auto launching you have it in RTH it’s too close to you to RTH (i.e. I think it needs to be 50m away by default), and then it’s wanting to land?
  • Raise the throttle
  • Wait the 10 seconds (if you’ve done the idle throttle, which I do recommend) for the low throttle to start
  • Throw

You shouldn’t need to touch anything, you can have a beer and watch it RTH or loiter around (I put on my goggles, etc). Then turn off the nav mode (don’t disarm), and you have it in angle (I personally then put it into manual, but one step at a time)

Absolutely this. Have it on both of mine. Not 10 seconds, but yeah some and 10 seconds a good start I guess… Reduce as you get comfortable. Maybe 20% depending on what “take off” throttle is. Give the prop time to get going and get grip

Shouldn’t be in Horizon full stop. I don’t even have it on a switch, lol. Whats the point of it? Just get used to angle, mayube increase max roll angles if you want to do tighter turns. Arco/Manual isn’t hard, though I nearly ALWAYS land in Angle, you know Steve why Horizon isn’t the best for landings heh… If you’re going to use Horizon, use it when safely flying around.

Also have you ever actually tuned it? Done auto tune. Oh hang on do you need Horizon for that? Can’t remember.

Check this value in the CLI @stevesb:

nav_rth_allow_landing = FS_ONLY
Allowed values: NEVER, ALWAYS, FS_ONLY

Also check it’s not fail safing. You have any OSD recordings to show?

That’s the important thing Steve, any recordings we can analyse to try to sort your problem
Cheers
Steve

No recording as guess which idiot hasn’t got in that habit yet. But guess which idiot does learn

Do you fancy sending a DUMP ALL from the FC ?
Might be able to spot something

I’ve set idle throttle now with a 10 second delay. You are right it may be a bit long but for now i can wait.

At present i just had it set so it would exit auto launch into horizon as was planning on getting the auto tune done, but i need it to stay in the air longer than 30 seconds for that
Throttle set at 1700 which should be plenty/ is pkent as it went up
Whats bugging me is when you @GunjaFPV launched it for me apaart from trying to land in horizon i thought it flew ok for something untuned. Now the bastard doesn’t want to leave my side.

Have horizon set as Painless sets that in his auto tune videos

Yes I remembered he does that, gives you more roll. I think I did my auto tunes, then removed it and auto tune. But then again I got a tonne of switches! Once you get happy, learn manual/ACRO ASAP and keep Angle for emergencies/landing, and get rid of horizon

Then again a bit of air time would help. Good luck!

We all started somewhere, and we learn something new every day, be boring otherwise!

You’ll get there, as you are willing to learn, that’s what we gotta do!
