The wealth of knowledge this group has is just amazing
will be opening a ticket with DJI today and will give them this info too as it may help them to ensure they get to the bottom of this and stop other Neo’s from flying away.
I really want to like this little drone but I have so far only logged like 4 mins of flight time on it and at the moment I just don’t trust it
Had a chat with DJI Support and they suggested I recalibrate the IMU - I did that and I have left it by a window to get some sats - got around 10 - 12 in the window and had the motors running - too windy to fly outside at the moment but it never lost sat connection and all seemed normal even though it was not airborne
now to wait for some decent weather to take it to an open space to test fully but maybe this has resolved the issue as I cant remember if I did the calibration when I did the firmware update as it was like 6 weeks ago when I got the drone and I have not had a chance to fly it.
Maybe @Snothead can confirm if this maybe was the cause / solution for him too ?
This might sound a bit daft so make sure your neighbours aren’t watching
It’d be interesting to stand outside with the Neo locked on to a bunch of sats and while holding it in the air try tilting it at various angles up to 90° (but not beyond) to mimic some spirited flying and see what happens to the satellite counter?
I don’t want to do it at home as I live next to a major road that is just out the back of my garden and a housing estate and with how bad it flew yesterday in just about near perfect weather I would hate to think where it might end up as it just zoomed off and I had little to no control.
I got lucky yesterday that it didn’t hit a tree and I was able to force it to land before it ended up in a group of kids playing in the snow.
So will wait for the weekend - hope the wind dies down and head to the farm field I have access too and give it a go there in the hope that it wins back my trust.
I didn’t mean fly it, I just mean hold it - props not spinning, then tilt at various angles to see what happens to the number of satellites or to the compass.
I walked around my garden today holding the drone. I had calibrated it first. The mist satellites I could get was 9. This is less that the previous 2 Neo’s and not enough for setting the home position. My Zino reported 16 and good to fly. Looking at my flight at Kelston on Saturday. The drone lost satellite positioning 4 time in a 1350’ flight at 350’ up.
My 1st Neo went 6.5 miles before drifting into a twig.
No 2 covered 1.7 miles before taking off in a straight line.
But number 3 has only covered 2042 feet and lost satellites many times.
I think it’s safer to bin it.
Just as a by the way. Neo 2 appeared to land in a memorial sight with 68% battery. Not a good place to land. As every memorial was covered in LED lights.
eeek that your two have gone like crazy ! Thanks for the feedback.
I will take a little walk around the garden tomorrow to see what it does - I did try it stationary earlier and it sort of looked promising but not keen on trying to fly it due to being just off a major road - a school close by and a housing estate. Who know where it may end up.
So today DJI said to load the new firmware to correct the issue.
I loaded it and connection to satellites appears slightly better. I can now get the drone to save the home point( 17 sats)
Turning the drone upside down immediately drops as expected? To 9 sats but does recover after 30 seconds to 12 sats.
Tilting the drone to extreme angles makes no difference . But turning the drone to head south east instantly drops the day count. I tried it 20 times. It was the same problem every time.
I am working from home today so will take it to Cock Ridge (not a great name for a place) a bit late later to fly it.
Hi - so I did a test too in the garden and things look promising.
I did the firmware refresh on my drone via the DJI Assistant 2 app and I also did the IMU and Compass calibration just to be on the safe side ( DJI Support recommended to me the IMU calibration but didn’t mention anything about the firmware update as I was on the latest ver to start with - I did the refresh of the firmware to be 110% sure it was loaded correctly and I prefire to install firmware via a cable than via WiFi and I suspect I did the update originally via WiFi )
I did fly it in the garden - it hovered quite well and maintained a decent location lock but it is quite windy in the garden at the movement ( gusts of around 15-17mph )
Looking at the airdata ( wont share it as if I strip the map stuff you lose quite a bit of gps data and I don’t need everyone knowing my exact home location ) Sat numbers range from a high of 21 with a GPSLevel of 5 down to a low of 14 and a GPSLevel of 4 - 18 Sats with a mix of GPS Level 4/5 seem to be the avg on the flight.
I did another flight where GPS was between 15 and 23 and GPSLevel between 4 and 5
I did hold it in my hands with the motors running and tilt it in a bank left / bank right motion and held it for 20 or so seconds and a pitch forward / back too with little to no change in the sat numbers on the controller.
So I guess and I hope all is back to normal now.
I hope on Sunday to head out to Cannock Chase for some mountain biking tracking shots - hopefully it don’t zoom off too far haha the chase will be on to recover it haha.
Will try and do a bit of flying on the Saturday to be confident with it as its had a bit of a mind of its own the last two times.
X jet mentions in this video regarding the neo gps issue @6,58 too 9,29 flyaways etc which seems to be happening not just here & potentially a common fault,
it does seem to be a common thing for sure - I have never had a DJI drone behave like how my neo did the other day and it was quite disconcerting - hope to give it another go over the weekend but the test the other day seem to suggest it might behave itself
I just feel like I might be going on a bit of a hunting mission on the weekend for my drone haha
You probably watched that bit above, he says something about when it’s recording possibly overloading the software or something, I usually watch his vids & see that so thought id pop it here as I know some of you guys seem to be having same( similar issues) hope you get it sorted
yeah that is a bit of a worry that as my test the other day I didn’t record anything - I just hovered / flew a little bit around the garden then while having the motors running and did a bit of a tilt test to see if that changed the sat numbers / fix I had and it seemed all good from that point of view
But now the mention of video recording I am now a little concerned that they might have a point here about overloading the memory / cpu etc
Yes maybe at the weight of only 135 grams & a drone so small possible that DJI have crammed to much in this time ? I don’t know but maybe a FW update might fix it I guess only time will tell, but I understand anyone’s concern who owns( flys) one of these if all of a sudden it decides to wonder off & do its own thing is a worry( concern).
