What should I buy, a DJI Neo 2 or a Mini 4 Pro?

Hi there I’m looking for some advice /opinions. I have a Neo and really love flying it although I’ve just not used it as much as I would have liked like as often when I have time the conditions don’t suite.

Given the recent launch of Neo2 and heavy Black Friday savings I’m am considering an upgrade.

Any thoughts of Neo2 v Mini 4 Pro. Is the extra cost of Mini 4 worth it?

Finally, would you recommend the RC2 controller

I look forward to thoughts views.

I wouldn’t buy a new Mini 4 now.

With the Mini 5 arriving earlier this year the 4 is now considered End of Life (EOL) and it won’t be getting any love from DJI (bar a last minute critical bug fix).

If you can get a bargain on a second hand one, go for it

Your choice of controllers will be very much limited by the compatibility with your intended drone, don’t get caught out by this one

Contrary to @PingSpike, I’m delighted with my recent purchase of a Mini 4 Pro at a decent price. It is a wonderfully capable drone with a cracking camera.

The Neo 2 looks lovely, too. Looks ideal for social media and tracking but also fairly decent for capturing trips and landscapes.

Depends on what you’re going to use it for. I’d take the 4 Pro every day for the camera but I’d certainly consider the Neo 2 if I was looking for a device for tracking shots where there’s a risk of bouncing off a few branches. But if you’ve already got a Neo for that anyway, is it more sensible to diversify and grab a mini drone?

I like having a dedicated screen on my controller to keep my phone free, but don’t know if it is worth it if the extra outlay is steep.

Keep the Neo, see if you can bag a Mini4 Pro and RC2 combo?

The RC2 controller will work with both the Mini4 pro and the Neo. The RC2 will make the Neo a bit more useful, with longer range .
I’m not sure if it would reliably provide the Neo with waypoint planning, and it certainly won’t make the Neo better in wind or extend it’s battery life.

It should, though I haven’t got the drones to test it with, also work with the Neo2 and Flip.

Given that you have a Neo already, a mini 4 pro offers more photographic and videography opportunities to you, as evidenced by the many, many superb postings on this site.

So I would echo this :backhand_index_pointing_down:

That may be so but the important detail is… :backhand_index_pointing_down:

Thanks for the responses so far and much appreciated. Others welcome.

I think I’m decided that RC2 seems like a good idea and would be backward compatible with Neo I had thought of trading in but may considering keeping if I go down the mini route. Hadn’t considered Pro 5 as not sure I can stretch the budget that far. Is it worth finding the extra?

Does anybody recommend the DJI care cover?

Horses for courses, and my reccommendation would be for both if you could afford it. Mini 4 is superb for landscapey sort of video/stills, and easier to keep VLOS at range. Neo 2 excellent for follow-me/orbit and general filming of people doing things, also close-to-buildings-trees-rocks stuff, with the addition of OA but if you can live without that, you’ve already got a Neo. The two drones will give a huge range of potential shots, and of course the Neos are a nod towards FPV as well.

But with two drones, you will be entering a whole new world of battery-charging fun!

I figured I would share something that might help anyone on the fence about gear.

I started with a DJI Neo because I was not big on video editing and just wanted something simple to fly. Two flights later, I realised I wanted more resolution and control, so I jumped straight to the Mini 4 Pro. As a former photographer, the difference was worth it for me.

About the remote: if the budget allows, getting the version with the built-in screen is a no-brainer. Having my phone locked into the controller was driving me mad. Notifications popping up, battery drain, sunlight glare, someone calling me mid-flight… no thanks.

A dedicated screen makes the whole experience smoother. Even a spare phone works if you have one lying around, but separating “drone device” from “phone” was a big upgrade in quality of life for me.

Just my two pence.

Goggles and a proper controller make the Neo even better (you can also use them on your 4)

Don’t forget you’ll need a mate though to spot for you

The Mini4 Pro remains the best sub 249g drone you can buy. It might be at the end of its marketing life, but do not mistake that for believing its days are numbered - after all, many people are still happily flying their Mini 2s and 3s. The Mini 4 Pro has still got many years life left in it yet! It is a mature product, and won’t let you down. The glitches have been ironed out.

yes, i bought the mini 5 pro, but the statement if very accurate with the SUB 249g ! as the mini 5 pro is slightly over …

Re Goggles don’t make the mistake I did , the Goggles 3 and the Goggles N3 are completely different.
The N3 will NOT work with the Mini4Pro whereas the 3’s will.
They are great with the Neo though.

I have the neo and the neo 2 .. and must say the 2 in my eyes is a different animal compared to the original neo so muck more usable and just seems more user friendly… I get roughly the same cinematic videos as my friends with the 4 pro .

In manual ?

I’m “still” (only purchased last year), flying my Mavic 2 pro (circa2018), I’ts a brilliant drone, great camera. Also have mini 4pro. As long as batteries are good the drones good to fly.

Thanks all for the useful comments.

I made a decision on Friday to go with the Pro 4. Costco had a deal Mini 4 Pro + RC2 +sd card for £499 so went for that as seemed better than most 2nd hand options.

Will buy charger and couple of spares batteries and the drone care.

Undecided whether to keep Neo for a month or two after flying the 4 for a while.

When I gain some confidence will start sharing some footage.

In both the ai and the manual modes
