Whitby, North Yorkshire

Long on my drone bucket list, Whitby is a place that I try to visit regularly but have yet to manage a time when there is no or low enough wind to fly!

This week I did just that and here’s an image from a set that I am just processing. Thursday morning was perfect flying weather there. I arrived at around 5.30am and as the sun rose the air was absolutely still so I took the risk in flying out over the harbour - I’m always nervous about that!

Taking off from the Pavilion Drive Car Park next to the Captain Cook Memorial, I couldn’t have asked for better conditions. There were few people around, hardly any birds at that time and nothing happening to distract from the pictures.

More shots incoming…I’ll post them on my Substack first - https://whitepixels.substack.com/ and they will have a permanent home on my website in the coming days - https://camerastuff.co.uk/

Thanks!

Great photo I go to Whitby all the but I have never taken my drone only my cameras would love something like this so can I ask where did you fly from to get this shot was it on the end of the pier

Sam

I’ve been to Whitby several times and find that the East Pier is ideal for TOAL. The OP took off from an elevated position on the West cliff.

Hi Sam, glad you liked the image, I’ve just posted some more from my shoot.

I arrived very early (5.30am) and parked on North Terrace looking down over the harbour. On-street parking there doesn’t start until 9:00am and there was loads of spaces so I could take my time. I launched my drone from where the Captain Cook statue is then flew out over the harbour and turned around.

You can find my other images here:

Its taken a few visits to find the day calm enought to fly! I don’t get there as often as I like, living in Barnsley it takes me a couple of hours to get there.

Regards.
Craig M.

As promised in a previous post, here are images from a shoot from Whitby taken last week - 14 August 2025 - on a beautiful, still and sunny morning, before the world woke up, whilst everything was still and quiet. The night had crept slowly away and as the sun rose above the horizon, there I was, waiting patiently.

Surely Haddock in Yorkshire :person_shrugging:

You’re probably right, but there’s no alliteration with “Haddock and Coffins” …

Just curious .. the colour in these recent pics seems rather “washed out” .. even compared to the pic you posted previously .. the 5th shot seeming to be the exact same shot. Was this a “look” that you were wanting?

They have the “look” of Francis Sutcliffe’s photos of Whitby taken around 1900.

Yes, that’s the look I went for. When I post-processed I tried 3 different formats - full colour, washed out and black and white. I liked these the best.
