Just to clarify I wasn’t using the FCC hack my drone is completely standard 
The antennas on the remote are microwave patch antennas inside the top bumps on the phone holder frame, and they are relatively directional. If your remote was held horizontally, and your drone vertically above, that is about the worst possible scenario from a received signal strength point of view. Always try and point the bumps on the top of the remote (ie. the antennas) to where your done is in the sky.
