YouTube Basics!

I have decided to record some youtube videos!

I intend to use my Insta360 Link camera for now.

I can record sound via a Rode NT2A mic

So far so good! (I hope)

I suspect that I will want to add in footage from my drone, either stills or video. But this is not the main reason.

So my questions are:

  1. Which software should I record in?

If I used a camera, then the camera would record - am I okay just to use the Link software to record? Or do I need to use something else?

Pretty basic, I know. But I want to get that part right!

Or is every product identical on the quality of the recording?

  1. It can record in HDR at 4k25 or 4k30 - should I stick to 4K25? (not sure what the drone records at - or does that even matter?)

I intend to try CapCut to edit my videos - I have the full Adobe suite, but that is an overkill IMHO.

Probably do not want to spend a load of money right now - but maybe a softbox light or two would be good - but that is a whole new area…

Any tips would be appreciated.

No idea what @ianinlondon uses - but his videos look half decent.

All your clips (from different kit) ideally need to be in the same format (size and framerate)

You could try the free version of DaVinci Resolve for your video editing, and audio track editing and syncing.
Drones themselves do not record any audio track, largely due to their prop noise, and there being no sound worth recording at 50m+.

Ambient sound is free, with no copyright issues, and I am considering making recording that almost as high a priority as flying the drone itself. I have yet to try a good directional mic with my Zoom audio recorder (firmly on the ground, on a small tripod), to record birdsong, road noise, and other ambient sound to stitch back onto my video. I tried using stock audio tracks of traffic noise for instance, but they are either too short or not appropriate for the video content.

I am also on a learning curve with YouTube, and there is some awesome drone content out there (@AlbionDrones for example) that I would love to emulate, but just have to sit and watch with awe!

Thanks.

It is only going to be showing drone footage as a b-roll, so no sound required.

My video skills are not good enough for a drone video :joy:

Thank you kindly for those words, but I beg to differ, if I can do it - and I only started drone flying in August 2022 - then anyone can do it…

Please don’t feel that you won’t get there, its all about practice and understanding what you want to do, watch as much drone videos as you can, and then go out and try to replicate the moves and shots - you will soon develop your own style
And I am always up for a meet up to help folks where I can, but honestly, I ain’t nowt special, just obsessed and have the opportunity to visit some cool places
