How does youtube decide what picture to use for the video header? and how can this be changed if indeed it can?

One method is to edit video in YouTube Studio app on your smartphone and click the circled icon
How does it decide? It makes three thumbnails for you to choose from, beginning middle and end of your video, and if you don’t choose one, it will pick the middle one on your behalf.
You may upload your own thumbnail image if you want.

Hiya, Malc. Have you tried a program called Canva (free or paid version)? I always use it for mine. You can get YouTube thumbnail templates to use (plus other social network stuff). Just make sure the end result is a small file size, as YouTube restricts the file size for thumbnails.
