It’s nice to be here. I’m a relatively recent member, although I’m certainly not new to camera drones.

I’m Overkill — a 49-year-old Mediterranean-looking, olive-skinned, tanned, chubby bear with an unreasonable amount of crystal-white hair competing with an already rather impressive black beard. I’m probably more recognisable in person than by username. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

I primarily fly the DJI Mini 5 Pro, although I have access to other equipment too. My main interest is cinematic video: smooth, deliberate movement, creative manoeuvres, interesting framing and, just as importantly, what happens afterwards in the edit. I’m interested in the whole production process rather than simply putting an aircraft in the air.

I’m also particularly interested in drone regulations, because they directly influence how, where, when and by whom a drone can be flown. For me, the rules aren’t an afterthought — they’re part of the planning process and can fundamentally shape what is practical or even possible. That naturally leads into interests in flight planning, cinematography, editing, autonomous and automated flight, and mapping.

I’m equally happy flying recreationally or commercially. I don’t have a particular preference between the two: I simply enjoy the craft, the technology and everything surrounding it. It’s a genuine passion, and one that tends to lead to interesting and occasionally useful opportunities along the way.

Technology, video and audio production have been lifelong interests for me, and that extends well beyond drones. I’ve spent a very long time tinkering, designing and consulting across electronics, software and hardware — including designing PCBs and bespoke analogue and digital circuits.

One example is an ESP32-based EMS/OpenTherm gateway I’ve been developing for domestic heating systems. It combines OpenTherm with Ethernet, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, while leaving six external I/O connections available for things such as Dallas temperature sensors and RS485 CT clamps. The idea is to make it capable of working alongside home-energy systems too — monitoring and influencing battery, hybrid-inverter, PV, import/export and backup behaviour, and even using external APIs from EV chargers such as Ohme Home Pro or ePod to account for loads that a battery system might otherwise not know about. In other words: probably more engineering than a heating controller strictly needs. Hence the name Overkill. :wink:

I tend to lurk, read and absorb quite a lot before I weigh in, but I’ll happily get involved where a subject interests me or where I think I can contribute something useful.

I’ve been consulting for a long time, so I may occasionally be useful to somebody wrestling with a technical, planning or practical problem. Equally, I’ve learned that expertise is partly knowing what you don’t know, so I’m hoping there are plenty of people here who can teach me something too.

For me, good judgement comes from absorbing information from different sources, questioning it, and then curating it with a reasonably discerning eye. I tend to bring a mixture of technical curiosity, foresight, contingency planning and risk management to things.

And finally, a small disclaimer: yes, I really do use em dashes — like this. I’m not trying to make my posts sound AI-generated; I just happen to find punctuation useful. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Flying a drone is great fun but sometimes you feel the need to have a purpose for doing so and the Challenges category provides some great reasons for you to fly.

There are regular challenges which are open to all, that attract members of all abilities. Support, advice and constructive criticism is freely available; still photography, video and the techniques for editing both are involved in the challenges. Suggestions, for subjects or for complete challenges, are always welcome - take a look in the Challenges category for more information.


We’re a well established club with many knowledgeable members so it’s very likely that any issues you come across will have been discussed here before. Our discussion forum has very powerful search features which should help you find what you need but if you get stuck you can post a new question in the Questions & Answers category.

I too have the Mini 5 Pro, but only since last week! I also love the ESP32, I mainly use the WROOM32D for my little projects.

Thanks very much for the welcome, Deano — and for all the pointers. Drone Scene and Good 2 Go are particularly relevant to me, as the regulatory and planning side is something I’m genuinely interested in rather than something I only look at when I have to.

I’ll have a proper look through the map and the challenges too. Having a community sourced resource like that is rather useful, especially when you’re trying to balance where you can fly with what you actually want to achieve creatively.

I appreciate the tip about the search facilities. I’m very much a “read everything I can find before asking the question” sort of person, so I suspect I’ll get quite a lot of use out of that. Thanks again for the welcome!

It’s great to hear you’re into the ESP32 as well. The WROOM32D is a very capable little thing for projects of this sort. Most of what I build tends to start with “I wonder whether it could…” and then somehow ends up considerably more complicated than the original problem required.

What sort of projects have you been using yours for? I’m always interested in seeing what other people have done with them.

Hi @Overkill. I mainly use the ESP32 for creating temperature and humidity dataloggers. They either report to Thingspeak, or my local Home Assistant. I have one under each white good in my kitchen so if anything starts to leak water I will know about it very quickly. I also have a could in my loft and then outbuildings. I have also created my own touch-screen controllers for use with beer brewing boilers. They monitor and control the heat as well as count the amount of bubbles that are produced per hour. I also turned my house outside flood lights into smart bulbs that hook into Home Assistant. Works very will with geotagging and zones, our lights now all turn on when it is dark and it sees we are returning home. Once home they turn off after we open and close the door on our shoe cupboard. I spread my time between PCB design, programming, 3D printing, helping a company to develop smart stills, looking after our children (2), and now drones.

The leak detection under the white goods is a particularly good idea — simple, practical and actually useful when you need it. And I like the sound of the brewing controllers too; measuring bubble production as part of the process is exactly the sort of thing I’d probably end up over-engineering myself. :joy:

It sounds like we have quite a bit of crossover in our interests — PCB design, programming, 3D printing, Home Assistant and now drones. I’m also rather fond of projects where you start with a simple “I wonder if I can…” and several iterations later you’ve somehow built an entire system around it.

I’m currently working on a few things, although the most relevant one is an ESP32-based EMS/OpenTherm gateway for heating and home-energy integration. It started life as a way of talking to the boiler and has gradually acquired rather more capabilities than it probably ever needed. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

The home-energy side is where it gets particularly interesting for me — I’m experimenting with ways of combining temperature/energy monitoring, CT measurements and APIs from other devices so that the system can make better decisions about battery, PV, import/export and EV charging.

Your setup with Home Assistant, geofencing and the lighting automation sounds very nicely thought out though. The shoe-cupboard trigger is a great touch! :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Hi @Overkill, thank you for your thoughts and comments. I too will soon be using Home Assistant for home energy. I am having solar panels installed in November, then a Fogstar battery a month or two later. The plan is to hook it all up and let HA decide when and how to charge the battery and when to sell it back to the grid.
