Advantages or disadvantages ? advice needed upgrading my Macbookpro M2 ( bigger screen needed )

Without the font scaling to 150%, I found the DR GUI on the 4k screen almost unreadably small (even on a 32" monitor! :scream: … probably the main reason I set it to 1440)… and whilst there is a font scaling within DR, sometimes using DR on the 1080 laptop meant getting to that setting was a pain, and a restart of DR.
DR now looks fine on either. #Result.

Oh - @Kirky - I’d add that for me those two-screen screen shots are how I actually see it.
The screenshot images represent the relative resolutions of the two screens … but since my screens are 16" and 32" those screenshots are an accurate representation of what I physically see.

Obviously if you go for a smaller large screen, the physical difference may not be as much, but you’ll still be getting the improved viewing that the larger screen can give.

Yes I noticed the larger images was clearer ( that’s viewing on my phone too ) I think it’s safe to say the bigger screen is a must moving forward,
I guess it’s like trying to view on a phone compared to a laptop - easier to see clearer detail as compared to a phone, it’s all making very clear sense now,
Many thanks for your input appreciated :+1:

Pun intended, too, I imagine.

Depends if you want a bigger screen all the time or just when at home. You can connect a monitor using USB C to USBC/HDMI cable/ display port etc. there are accessability options in OSX but there are downsides to that route. I use a Dell Ultrasharp monitor for photo editing with a MacBook Pro and a Mac Studio.

Yes just for home

What are the downsides if you don’t mind me asking as I’m just adding to my basket now,

1 Mac Studio 27ā€ 5k
1 Magic Keyboard
1 Magic track pad
1 Magic Mouse

Does anyone know if the monitor comes with the lead to pair it to my laptop or do I have to buy a lead separate if so what one kindly ?
Thank you

What does it say in the specs

Ah yes it says Wayne, it comes with the monitor & a 1 metre thunderbolt cable, ( maybe the cable is to pair ? ) sorry this is very new to me so want to make sure I’ve got everything :+1:
Thank you

Like I said before goto the shop

Yes I’m going tomorrow but I have in basket on Amazon as it’s actually cheaper than Apple by Ā£200 I doubt Apple will do a price match but I will ask

Tha accessibility options basically make everything bigger on screen so you see less, contrast is increased which can skew what see.
Before going for the Mac display it might be worth checking the Alogic monitor reviews in Mac World. I did look at the Mac display but the lower spec have a gloss screen which I didn’t like, I believe the Alogic do as well. OK if you don’t have a window or other light source behind you. The higher spec Mac display with anti reflective coating is stupidly expensive.

I use the Logitech MX keys and MX Master mouse, syncs with 3 computers I use Mac and Windows PCs so more convenient. Automatically adjusts keyboard layout between Mac and PC.

Thank you for your advices guys,
Yes I shall have a look at what’s mentioned above & also go see / test one in person side by side comparison then I’ll know what’s what,
Regarding the gloss glass screen is what I’m used to so that’ll be staying & the room has blinds as well as curtains & dims really nice so reflection shouldn’t be a problem, that said if the room is not suitable I have a spare room now my lads moved out which will work - was(is) eventually going to be a computer - music - chill out room when I get around to it,
Thanks for the advice appreciated :+1:

@SparkyFPV wayne it says on Google Apple price match not sure how true but id rather buy from them anyway, thanks mate.

Take your Macbook Pro with you to hook up to the monitor you are interested in, so that they can demonstrate the settings you’d need to get the best experience.

Wading through the settings after you’ve bought it might be a pain.

After 9 months of my 4k monitor I’ve only really managed to get it spot on today … as above. :man_facepalming:

Yes I thought take my MacBook is best for sure,
I’ve just spent the last few hours wading through YT videos & it’s a minefield, so many mixed opinions - some say yea great - some say the blacks are not as black as the MacBook Pro XDR with some saying they have back light bleed in the darks / shadows or less contrast :grimacing:
Very conflicting but going to the Apple Store tomorrow I’ll compare for myself, however one guy did say if money is no object just buy the XDR Pro studio & your guaranteed the best results as much as id love XDR jeeeeez that’s serious money ā€œ just for a hobby ā€œ Damn ! :joy:

I’m not a professional (photography, videographer or IT), far from it.

As a hobbyist photographer, over the last 7 years, I’ve used a Mac Air connect to a 24ā€ HD monitor and then a Mac Mini M1 with a LG 32ā€ QHD 4k gaming monitor, both combinations have served me very well.

The LG 32ā€ monitor didn’t cost me anything, because my wife as been working from for nearly 10 years and she asked her employer for a large screen monitor, due to all the documents and spreadsheets she users and they sent the LG 32ā€ monitor.

I’ve been using a Datacolour Spyder Colour calibration device since 2018 and I’d always recommend any photographer (Pro or Hobby) always use a calibration device.

An LG 32ā€ monitor will set you back about Ā£450 from Curry’s at the moment. (Other retailers have them too)
https://www.currys.co.uk/products/lg-ultragear-32gs85qb.aek-quad-hd-32-nano-ips-gaming-monitor-dark-grey-10266319.html

These LG monitors don’t have speakers, so you’re paying for a quality display, with minimal latency, because they are designed for gaming.

Like I said, I’m no IT professional, but if you want portability keep the MacBook Pro & buy a monitor, if not, then consider a Mac mini and a gaming monitor.

As you’ll know, you can’t upgrade the components in Mac’s, so an iMac will be expensive to upgrade because you buying a display too.

You’ll get a good high spec’d Mac mini for between Ā£800 & Ā£1200, unless your going for the M4 Pro chipset and masses of RAM.

I’ve found the Apple Magic Mouse not the best for photo editing, so I’ve used a Wacom tablet and stylus for editing.

As for keyboard, yes the Apple keyboard is nice and looks the part, but it’s not essential.

Thanks @TheBinman Jason
What you’ve said all makes sense & all taken on board, I just wish I had gone bigger but it is what it is hence trying to find a good solution, as an Apple lover myself I guess it’s kind of aesthetic’s as well which is kinda silly but I’ll see how it pans out tomorrow & regardless of how much I love Apple ( if it looks good but performs shit ) then I shall walk away with my laptop & be off to other retailers, be it curry’s or John Lewis & plug my laptop in to see which performs best as I’m not making the same mistake twice ( M2 not a mistake btw ) perfect picture quality just not the perfect size,
Cheers mate

The M2 chipset is more than capable for photo and video editing, unless you’re also doing 4k graphic animations too.

If moneys no object, then grab a fully spec’d MacBook Pro for the small price of Ā£7,049.00 plus the tilt & height adjustable Apple studio monitor at a further Ā£2,150.00 :flushed::flushed:

:joy::joy::joy::joy::joy::joy::joy::joy::joy:
