Advice please - cost effective computer solution for editing 4k footage

gawd… windows 11… sorry I know nothing… I suspect that will slow everything down … new software… more code … slower on older hardware

You can never have too much RAM. #simples

The ime spent rendering isnt an issue as I can be doing other things, its the ability to edit without lag that I need, and it has improved with a little work as suggested by folks on here to the point I think I can use it for at least a few months more yet…

Longer term I will need a laptop or desktop of my own, as my works laptop isnt strong enough for editing and I cant continue using Lee’s laptop all the time, so a second laptop for me and for editing is on the cards at some point…

We wont be getting rid of his laptop, as for what he uses it for it is more than capable, the second laptop would be the extra one for me to edit on and personal; use, allowing me to top using the works laptop for personal stuff - even tho I am allowed to do so - but they have now stopped access to USB storage devices on all work computers, making it useless for phot editing or for storing data as I can only transfer it through the web now…

Thanks for the advice and info Rob, appreciated… Any further ideas on how to improve his laptop would be appreciated

The C drive is an SSD drive at 98GB, the data drive is 1TB HDD…

IIRC it came with Windows 11…

I had to upgrade my pc think it was a yr ago now, if I render a 3min 4k@60fps now takes less than 3 mins depending on what editing I’ve done if it’s lots 6 maybe 7 mins now. I upgraded my windows tower put it together myself it isn’t difficult.

swapping out the 100gb SSD for something larger will help, I would recommend 500gb crucial, and then just clone the 100gb onto the new drive and ditch the 100gb drive (could get a usb3 to SATA case for it as a spare mobile drive)

it will help your swap file especially if you only have a few GB free

windows 11 is ok I expect… I am just avoiding it for as long as I can. I use Linux a fair bit too and like it a lot but I have some software that only runs on Windows!

plus I share at least 2 laptops with 2 kids and a wife… although we both have work supplied laptops and I have a tablet… 3 other laptops and a number of fanless pcs for CNC…

but everyone else can only cope with windows!

This has given me food for thought, been toying with upgrading my SSD from 228? to a 1TB, Ram i’m not over fused as it’s 16gb or should I

Device name Micks
Processor Intel(R) Core™ i7-9700K CPU @ 3.60GHz 3.60 GHz
Installed RAM 16.0 GB
Device ID 0F21CD8D-E29B-4F0A-8820-BA6F622D7A3C
Product ID 00330-80130-53613-AA580
System type 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
Pen and touch Pen support

It’s mainly the ssd, i just hope it’s as easy as i think, long time since i built a pc lol

https://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/products/sku/186604/intel-core-i79700k-processor-12m-cache-up-to-4-90-ghz/specifications.html

that CPU is good for a lot more ram, the bios is the bit that can limit HDD size… I’ve got a 750gb SSD and tried to put a 1tb SSD in the same machine and it was not happy

for cloning a HDD (sata) you just get one of these and install the cloning software and transfer everything across to the new hdd

https://www.amazon.co.uk/EasyULT-Drive-Adapter-Cable-Converter/dp/B079QQJB9L/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?crid=2KX6EETSK4ASV&keywords=sata+usb+adapter&qid=1700413367&sprefix=sata+usb%2Caps%2C207&sr=8-3

once done, shut the pc or laptop off, and swap the drives … reboot and all should be good, if not you can put the old one back in

Mmm maybe i should re think swapping the SSD to a 500, will have a look at what make of RAM is and maybe up that a bit

what machine is it (manuf + model number from sticker)

it may help to work out the specs exactly

some newer machines can use M2 drives too…

best to check before buying

my CNC fanless pc uses an M2 AND sata drive

I clone the primary to the backup so if I do have a problem I just swap drives

3XS Halo Gamer 2060 RGB Gaming Tower, bought from scan

Thats about all i know i’m afraid, the SSD is a samsung 860 evo 250gb

Geforce rtx blah blah, lol

I’ve got a Samsung 860 m2 and sata in the CNC pc…

hence worth a check if it’s an M2 or data

I will have a look later in the week Robert, much appreciated :+1:

Thats a cost effective solution, although I havent a clue when it comes to upgradng internal;s on Laptop or cloning the files over, I wouldnt dare do it myself…

Piece of cake, and there will be a video available on YouTube for most major makes

Yeah… scarey enough to replace a power cable and add the extra RAM, when it comes to moving SSD and transferring files I wouldnt know where to begin…

Watch a few vids, it will pre arm you ready for doing it yourself.
This little PC I shared yesterday, when it arrived I ran the installation so Win 11 was full installed, swapped the 512GB NVMe SSD for a 2TB I had lying around, and also fitted a 4TB 2.5" SSD, and transferred the OS all done in around an hour
