Altitude Angel now includes SSSI’s

I found a map site for Scotland

https://marinescotland.atkinsgeospatial.com/nmpi/default.aspx?layers=1505

And the searchable site for England

https://naturalengland-defra.opendata.arcgis.com/datasets/f10cbb4425154bfda349ccf493487a80/explore?location=53.731468%2C0.106594%2C11.75

You’ll also find one in Drone Scene on the next release

Will this include links to find the citations for SSSI sites ?\

If you want it to

We already include the SSSI name and the SD number, eg: SD591026

It wouldn’t take much to turn that in to a clickable link for you.

Go on then find this one, it is the closest to me

This has taken me 10 minutes on a PC to find

https://designatedsites.naturalengland.org.uk/SiteDetail.aspx?SiteCode=S1002940&SiteName=Dunham%20Park&countyCode=&responsiblePerson=&SeaArea=&IFCAArea=

https://designatedsites.naturalengland.org.uk/SSSIGlossary.aspx#citation

So can someone tell me if I can fly here?

Yes … but don’t crash into the beetles living in the trees

The site I use is https://magic.defra.gov.uk/MagicMap.aspx

On the left menu, tick: designations → land-based designations - > statutory → Sites of Special Scientific Interest (England)

Scroll the map to the SSSI you want to look at

Top menu, select site check (magnifying glass and document icon)
click ‘point’ as your designated area to check … click on the SSSI on the map (small red square appears), tick to exclude null results, then click Perform Site Check … you’ll get the direct link to the SSSI info and the citation report … once you know what you’re doing, takes a couple of mins.

Easy peasy (cough)

Of course … this may prompt a whole conversation about the legalities of flying in RAMSAR sites, Special Protection Areas etc etc)

It’s just a single tick box on Drone Scene

Ah … you’re just showing off now

Looking at the citation, I personally can’t see a reason not to fly there, apart from the fact that it was bequeathed to the National Trust ( and we all know their attitude towards drones ):wink:

And that is the point, all that research comes down to personal preference :scream:

Not where National Trust land is concerned sadly :wink:

On mine SSSI has a line through it so can’t be used ?

Ahh £12 a year to upgrade :roll_eyes::roll_eyes:

What who mentioned NT isn’t this post about SSSI’s :man_facepalming:

If you want to go there try

Here

Search results for 'National Trust' - Grey Arrows Drone Club UK

Oh, by the way, Altitude Angel don’t have a NT layer but guess what

Dronescene does :joy::joy:

See you get what you pay for

£1/month. Less than a pack of fags (I think, I gave up over a decade ago) or a few pints down the local.

I appreciate everyone’s circumstances are different, but if you can afford the type of drone that means you would benefit from access to this type of information, then £12 shouldn’t be much of a stretch. :peace_symbol: & :slightly_smiling_face:

Pretty sure everything in this thread we covered off when dronescene first introduced it including how to look up what the actual SSSI is. Which is a total faff in its own right.

The citation for Dunham Park actually says it was bequeathed to the NT…

It is you are correct but we are talking about if I can fly there because of SSSI just because it says NT land in that link is not a reason not to fly there

by the way, it’s a beautiful place

Have you tried TOAL at a National Trust owned place ? If you TOAL outside that area, then there’s no problem, but try within the confines of the park and NT staff will tell you to stop and desist :wink:
