Bala Lake - Added to Lakes and Reservoirs in Wales

I have just added this to the map of places to fly your drone at Drone Scene:

Land owner permission requirements unknown.

TOAL from the car park .

The originator declared that this location was not inside a Flight Restriction Zone at the time of being flown on 08/09/2022. It remains the responsibility of any pilot to check for any changes before flying at the same location.

Its a great scenic place to fly from, you musta got some great shots. Alas, I was land bound and only got shots with my travel camera when there.

The last time I was there having lunch was 3-4 years ago when I was coming back from touring IOM on my bike with the wife coming back through Wales.

Didnt have a drone with me at the time but our quiet lunch was rudely interrupted by several jets travelling up the loch (eastwards) at low level and v high speeds (read; Noisy!!!).

Defo worth ensuring that no temp frz’s pop up before or during your flights, also I noted when heading south for several miles from the pub/carpark there were signs off to the left suggesting high levels of interference should be expected I presume the military are still around those areas, not sure if it was some fixed or mobile installation or just the radar off the jets, defo worth bearing in mind.

Hi TayUK,

I always check for temporary zones yes, although RAF dont seem to create temporary zones here. There is a guide about flying in training areas here: https://dronesaferegister.org.uk/blog/working-with-the-raf-and-low-flying-requirements

I’m currently working In the valley by Dinas Mawddwy and the jets come over our heads at about 200 feet a couple of times a day. so no chance to fly here. My flight over the lake was in the evening so no flights at that time of day.

The whole of Wales is covered by Low Flying Area 7 (LFA 7), where helicopters can drop down to between 100ft and surface, and other aircraft can fly down to 250ft AGL (including fast movers)

Information about Military Low Flying, planned exercises and planned use of
Tactical Training Areas is available from the MOD Low Flying website at the

I’d love to get out there again but its a bit of a trek from the south coast

It is beautiful here. I’ve been lucky to be working in the area for the last week. My 20 mile drive to work from Bala every morning is stunning and completely different weather every day. I will miss it when I leave
