Bennerley Viaduct - Added to FPV in East Midlands

I have just added this to the map of places to fly your drone at Drone Scene:

Bennerley Viaduct (originally Ilkeston Viaduct) and known informally as the Iron Giant) is a former railway bridge, now a foot and cycle bridge, between Ilkeston, Derbyshire, and Awsworth, Nottinghamshire, in central England.

It was completed in 1877 and carried the Great Northern Railway’s (GNR) Derbyshire Extension over the River Erewash, which forms the county boundary, and its wide, flat valley.

The engineer was Samuel Abbott, who worked under Richard Johnson, the GNR’s chief engineer. The site required a bespoke design as the ground would not support a traditional masonry viaduct due to extensive coal mining. The viaduct consists of 16 spans of wrought iron, lattice truss girders, carried on 15 wrought iron piers which are not fixed to the ground but are supported by brick and ashlar bases. The viaduct is 60 feet (18 metres) high, 26 feet (8 metres) wide between the parapets, and over a quarter of a mile (400 metres) long. It was once part of a chain of bridges and embankments carrying the railway for around two miles (three kilometres) across the valley but most of its supporting structures were demolished when the line closed in 1968. The only similar surviving bridge in the United Kingdom is Meldon Viaduct in Devon.

The viaduct opened in January 1878 and it became a listed building in 1974.

The originator declared that this location was not inside a Flight Restriction Zone at the time of being flown on 10/09/2020. It remains the responsibility of any pilot to check for any changes before flying at the same location. Landowner permission may be required before taking off.

@milkmanchris - coordinates are slightly off for this one, can it be moved about 650m further south (visible on the satellite imagery)?

Good to know, that so many have flown here, its fairly local to me and i’d earmarked as somewhere for my maiden flight, as from memory it is a wide open space. Any advice either as to this location or maiden flights in general? I’ m planning on watching a you tube video to get a number of basic training manouvres to practice to gain confidence and want to build up competence gradually before taking it up and flying at a distance

advice… just go and have fun  stop worrying and when you get there just have a feel of the area while you fly… only way you can practise etc

I don’t understand the context of your message. The messages below are automated by the site because I added parking spaces and a pin as somewhere to take off/land.
Why does this merit your “advice”? I am not “worried” why do you think I am?
I just don’t get it, whatever ‘it’ is.
