Can I fly over castles, ruins, heritage places in the UK?

Visiting The UK next month from Australia. Can I fly over castles, ruins, heritage places in the UK?
*what app do you use in the UK that shows you where you can fly?

Its not a straightforward answer.

Often the site owners will not permitvtaking off and landing on their land so you may need tobtake off on nearby public land.

Then it depends on whether you can remain compliant with the rest of the regulations such as maintaining visual line of sight etc.

Download Altitude Angel Drone Assist app for airspace restrictions. Gets a bit more complicated for land based restrictions.

A lot of the places that may be attractive to you are owned or managed by the National Trust or English Heritage. Both organisations do not allow operating a drone from their land. Taking off from public land not within a CAA restriction is normally ok as long as safety precautions are followed. It is often easiest to be obvious about what you are doing, carrying a clipboard and wearing a hi-viz vest

Airspace is controlled by the Civil Aviation Authority, they impose restrictions or prohibit flying in certain areas, mainly around hazards such as airfields or other areas where drones and aircraft may meet.

Unless taking off or landing civil aircraft are required to maintain a minimum altitude of 500 feet. The maimuim altitude for a drone is normally 400 feet. But be aware that military aircraft and emergency services, especially helicopters, are not restricted to this and may appear at any height with little warning - if they do - get out of the way!

Our own Drone Scene, accessed from the hamburger menu next to your avatar at the top of the page, can be set on your phone home screen. It has a number of switchable layers showing restrictions. It is included as part of your GADC membership or, if not subscribed, as a basic version. It is continually updated and includes temporary restrictions (NOTAMS).

As Chris ( @milkmanchris ) says above use Drone Sceen - it uses the same datasets and more than Altitude Angel. It shows one particular organisation’s land holdings, those of the Crown Estate, Whatever your views of the monarchy it must be said that they have a refreshingly simple view of both drones and metal detecting - keep within the rules and all is ok

And, again, keep in touch with us in your travels, those in each area you intend to visit will be able to help out with local knowledge, advice and suggestions!
