OK Thanks for taking the time. It’s a shame there’s so much confusion and misleading information being given out.
Cheers
I am wanting to fly my A1 sub 250g DJI Drone in the Bournemouth and Boscombe area.
The rectangular Bournemouth CTR airspace is Class D surface to 2000ft. I am outside the circular flight restriction zone around the airfield, but still in the CTR rectangle.
Do I need permission or to inform Bournemouth ATC since it is Class D airspace?
Thanks very much.
Hi, Joe
Moved your post to this thread that will, hopefully, answer your question.
Any aspect you’re still uncertain about, please ask in this thread.
And, welcome to GADC, too.
I live in Bournemouth and the CTR is for aircraft not drones. Its by the airport you have to be careful of there is a round thing with a thing sticking out one side and the other side that’s what you can’t fly in.
No you don’t need permission, but depending how professional you want to be a courtesy call or email doesn’t go amiss. It also helps build a relationship with ATC so when you do want to get nearer to the airport tgey “may” be a bit more accommodating.
New here and wish to understand if I need to get authorisation to fly a drone in class D airspace? I have trawled the internet and Dronescene for answers, but it has made answering the question worse (lots of mixed messages etc).
Thank you and apologies if this question has been asked before.
David.
An often asked question - so I moved your post to where this has been explained, a few times.
Also look at Drone Scene, our other site and the information there regarding Class D Airspace.
Also, David /@David90008, it looks as though you’re quite new here
Why not nip over the Introductions page, and say hello properly and tell us a bit about yourself.
Depends on what drone your flying. If it’s small, especially <250g you don’t need permission in Band D Airspace (I have a quick look 1st and then turn the layer off in Drone Scene, especially when there are two FRZ close to each other.
If I’m flying close to a FRZ in Class D or otherwise, I tend to contact the ATC concerned … just a belts and braces thing as sometimes helicopters fly lower than 500ft, especially around the area of military bases.
Hello, thank you that information Munument Master and apologies to admin for starting a new topic, but grateful for you transferring original message to this thread
I have a DJI Mini 3 Pro drone.
Same as most of us, either that or a mini 2. Good to Fly in Class D if there are no other restrictions covered by NOTAM’s, Bylaws’s etc. Enjoy.
Just turn off the Class D air space, it’s not relevant to drone flyers
I turn it on Wayne just to see if I may get an ussue with a DJI NFZ unlock on site (doesnt happen that often but a pain in the proverbial if it does). I unlock at home if necessary begore I go.
The DJI layer is separate from the Class D layer. Class D has absolutely nothing to do with drone flights so might as well be turned off all the time
I know it is Deano, but its good to know in advance of a flight if you’re going to have to unlock or use a PIN. I have an RC so no Wifi other than using my phone as a hotspot, so much easier to unlock etc at home. It stays on, albeit briefly, for me!
I don’t think your quite getting what we’re saying… Class D air space has absolutely nothing to do with drone flights and won’t tell you if you need to unlock or not… that is the DJI Layer… A completely separate layer.
Class D doesn’t come into it at all.
I know the difference. I have been in a few places where I’ve had to use a PIN in Class D and it wasn’t in a DJI NFZ thats all!
Colin, have you an example of one?
There was one in Weston on Trent (i have a DS pin in that one) and another in Shrewsbury if I recall correctly. There was a couple more in Edinburgh but cant remember exactly where TBH. Some were whilst I was getting 5th GADC Birthday shots but cant remember which ones. I had one once near Stafford University that wasn’t in any zone at all? I had to log into DJI to get the PIN to unlock the drone that was hovering at 1m high. Was ok with my N1 but was a faff with the RC. I had one once where there was no Zone at all other than a hazard. Was in Quarry Park in Shrewsbury, I think it said I was near Copthorn brks? Maybe its just me doing something odd!
Colin, I had a look at this one
Having the Class D airspace enabled will not help you as we have said before its irrelevant to drone flyers
There are no restrictions on flying a drone at that location
The only reason you have to mess about before flying is that it was a DJI drone
and they (DJI) have made up the restrictions
As you can see from the image below that has the real restrictions overlayed by the fake DJI ones
The answer is to hack your DJI drone or buy another make
