I’ll also have a look at tinkercad, although I still want to try and learn freecad. Could be a good compromise.

Unfortunately, “proper” CAD systems make hard work of modifying neutral format files like STLs as they don’t contain definitions of the features that they understand - extrusions, shafts, holes, chamfers, etc. An STL file to the CAD system is just a bunch of points and faces. I usually end up just remodelling the item I want from scratch because I know I’ll be able to adjust it more easily in the future, should I need to .
Being a “proper” CAD user 
, I’ve not bothered looking at Tinker CAD, but a lot of the guys on here use it.
