Finally got round to editing the Crosby Beach Video. I have tried to do the Dolly Zoom technique. Anyway hope you like.
I’ve watched this 4 times now and I can’t figure out what’s happening in the opening scene. You’ve reversed the vid (cool) but I can’t work out what’s happening with the background. Did you split the vid? It’s zooming in at a seemingly disproportional rate? Or maybe my second glass of wine is working better than expected
It’s called “dolly zoom” … although, as the name suggests, this is normally achieved with a zoom lens, it can be created with a non-zoom lens.
The idea (if you have a zoom) is to change the amount of zoom to keep the main object the same size whilst you move toward, or away, from the object.
So - without a zoom lens - you fly toward/away from an item as you record, and then “zoom” the video in post to maintain the main object at the same size.
Edit: Oh … and @mercy has done that latter rather well.
Fantastic video. Well done Mercy. Excellent work with the dolly zoom technique. Can’t wait to see more.
Exactly how @OzoneVibe explains it. Dolly zoom it’s called. I had to reverse the video due to the fact I couldn’t figure out how to achieve the technique by zooming out.
Thank you so much. I’m impressed with my first attempt at it. Decided If I was to do it again I’ll record it in 4K then it keeps the image quality a bit better. This was recorded in 2.7k.
As I mention above, with a zoom lens it’s achieved by actually zooming the lens.
The M2Z has the feature built in as a function - and an example of it in use can be seen in this video.
Great work @Mercy
The finest example of dolly zoom (or the one that sticks in the mind the best), Mr Spielberg at his finest.
You’re very welcome mercy XX
I must be thick but this Dolly Zoom thing is going right over my head. Even the Jaws clip didn’t help.
That was a very pleasant video. Very well done
