Davinci Resolve - v19 is out of Beta

Yes, I’ve read a few reviews. Sounds generally good apart from some control labels not being backlit like the original was too. Makes it hard to read in a dark room. I tend to edit first, then colour grade, so the ‘Micro’ panel isn’t on my desk till I need it. I’ll probably stick with it unless someone wants to make me an offer!

Does anyone have any tips on good training materials for getting to grips with DaVinci Resolve? This is the free version rather than Studio.

I’ve previously used iMovie, LumaFusion and use Corel VideoStudio for some work stuff. Resolve seems to be massive in scope, and I’m just looking for some decent videos/walkthroughs to help get started.

Any and all advice welcome!

There have been a few minor updates since those were made, but both are v19 and, as far as ALL the basics are concerned, fully up to the job.

Covers areas you probably won’t need - just concentrate on the tabs/areas that you will :
Essential : Media (getting clips into resolve), Timeline (trimming clips, sequencing and transitions), Deliver (rendering and auto uploading to YT if that’s your preferred workflow).
Then look at : Colour (for grading, and a lot more), Fairlight (for serious audio manipulation) and Fusion (for all sorts of compositing, graphics, 3D graphics, etc).

It’s always good to look at what you don’t think you need, too. One day you might need something and think "I remember that … " and have an idea where to look, or can come back to the vid for the starter info.

@OzoneVibe when you go to their website Blackmagic point you to their resellers. Go to them and cheapest speed editor (with studio) is still £332 not the £315 on their website? :disappointed_relieved:

Strange, for sure.

Probably contact the reseller direct on Monday (not sure any of the UK ones are much more than 9-5 Mon/Fri).

The resellers’ systems might not have updated automatically.

I also notice that CVP.com (who I used) have a BF countdown running : CVP.com - BLACK FRIDAY AND CYBER WEEK Deals, Offers, Codes and Coupons : so might not kick in until the day.

(Although they do have the Colour Panel already on discount, and DR itself. :man_shrugging: )

@OzoneVibe :clap:Be interesting to see what they say Dave. I’ve been watching CVP and others and they have been the cheapest for weeks now at £332. I’m going to wait until next Fri and see what happens. :crossed_fingers:

They have fewer Blackmagic items on Sale than CVP.

@OzoneVibe Yes Dave, Only interested in the Speed Editor with studio at mo though. Should of got last year TBH but was just getting the hang of the free version. I now am at the limits of what it can do, against what I’d like it to do!

I only went for Studio for about 3 tools that I specifically needed. Mostly what I do could be done on the free version … though since my laptop (as old as it is) has two GPUs, I have been getting the benefits from the Studio version’s ability to take advantage of them.
Eff know what I’d have thought of DR had it been single GPU … when I got Studio I wasn’t aware of the benefits, in that respect, and (genuinely) I was actually unaware my laptop had two!

@OzoneVibe I know a few, you included, that have Studio and can’t wait for it to use the full capabilities of my RTX GPU and the board GPU (12th gen).

I signed up to 19 beta and it improved my speed and render rate but still have to drop down to 720p from 4K footage to get a smooth edit speed. Just go back to 4K to colour grade etc.

I’m expecting great things Dave! :hugs:

Via Timeline resolution, you mean? Or creating 720 proxies?

I find fully uncompressed DNxHR HQX proxies are fast enough. They take up a shit load of space, though.

Just drop the settings timeline and res temporarily while I edit in full mode. Then take it back to 4k before rendering. I Stopped using proxy 's as they were painfully slow to create and found them slower to edit with. :+1:

They can be - but their background proxy creator, that was introduced during v18, I think, just meant I let that do its thing whilst I was doing other things - and came back to edit when finished.

Recently I have spent more time in the depths of Fusion that actual video editing. Keep meaning to do more again.

A smaller project …

I’m intrigued. What do you use Fusion for mainly? I haven’t braved that tab yet.

Personally, mostly creating 3D animated graphics from scratch. That node tree above does that. (I zoomed out to hide the detail since it was done for for someone else.)

But the scope of what it can achieve with source video almost has no limits … even analysing video to recreate the 3D environment into which 3D objects (text, for instance) seem to be part of the original scene and move logically with it.

The power it has makes even trying to summarise it’s scope really impossible.

I find the mental challenge off using it and producing what I had in mind with satisfying … once the frustrations of not getting what your want are overcome.

Some time I’ll try and create some examples.

Look forward to seeing some results. I may brave it yet!

Here’s when I was first playing with 3D analysis of a drone vid, and adding 3D text.

The video ain’t great or graded … I was only playing with Fusion … but you’ll get the idea …
