Davinci Resolve - v19 is out of Beta

Another drone vid 3D analysis and 3D text …
(Can’t recall who’s vid I borrowed - not mine.)

Creating something from absolutely nothing.

All created from a blank page in Fusion.

This is the stuff I really like doing.

Spangly! Nice lighting. I remember playing with an early version of Photoshop (I used to be a graphic designer) when they introduced 3D vector stuff trying to do 3D type (don’t remember trying to animate it though). I have trouble getting enough time just for ordinary editing, so Fusion may have to wait.

Thanks for this. Watched the shorter of the 2 videos last night and found it really useful. Great that he also provides all of the clips and other elements so you can follow along with the workflow. Everything suddenly makes a lot more sense!

Casey is one of YTs best for DR tutorial videos - his channel is definitely worth a sub :+1: :+1:

No reboot needed (for me) - Win10

Works fine here. As did 19.1.0.

I still cant get my head around the way DR interacts with the OS and colour management (or more to the point, doesnt).
Getting consistent output is hard.

Well - it obviously does, when set up correctly - because many of the top colourists in the world (MacOS and Windows) use DR.

Is it easy to fully understand? Nope - it’s not. But then again, using any other editor with full-featured pro colour management is no easier.

Is it worth researching on YT to better understand it? Definitely.

Do I fully understand colour management? Nope. The world of Colour Spaces, Gammas and Gamuts is a real minefield … but, personally, I like trying to learn this shit. #masochist

One of the biggest problems is that DR is, fundamentally, a very pro piece of kit, and many of the YTs that might otherwise help are biased, in content/terminology/technicality toward pros using kit that’s in a different league (technically, and also in colour space terms) to DJI footage. So trying to follow along with these vids can be a real :exploding_head: exercise.

And then, because of the power of DR, the same thing can often be achieved in half a dozen ways, and different YTs use different ways.

I try to concentrate on finding ones that are focusing on D-Log (on one of its guises) and Rec709 - depending on my limited range of devices. But then the tech beyond what I have or need fascinates me and I’m off down another rabbit hole learning stuff that’s of no direct use to me - but can help me understand the minefield a little better.

No not “obviously it does” at all.
Firstly, the app itself is NOT ICC/OS colour profile aware on windows. This is documented.
You:re supposed to create a 3D viewer LUT to apply in the project settings to allow the internal viewer to display accurate colours. This i have done but doesnt seem to work that well.

Contrast to Premier which is full ICC aware by default so doesnt need any of these workarounds.

The new v19 has a “use Windows colour management” tick box. Nobody seems to know what it does, its not in the new reference manual and doesnt SEEM to fix it. The BM forum isnt able to help of that.

Professional colourists use a declink/lutbox to an external display calibrated to sRGB and so on. They generally dont work on colour using the internal viewer and screen.

Im fully aware of colour spaces, gamma and gamut (my day job for the last 10+ years has been photography). My screens are setup, hardware calibrated and profile. The issue is Resolves handling of it.

We’re not talking about applying the right colour space to footage or anything like that here. Its what DR displays in the viewer not matching the actual colours of the calibrated display (or output) as internally it ignores the ICC profile, or at least did.

With a properly calibrated P3 display, creating a Rec709/2.4 LUT and applying that SHOULD produce consistent output as per the docs. However it doesnt. Again the BM forum only solution is “you need a declink external display”.

An hour long YT on 40+ Studio Only features.
