Pre-Installation Notes

For DaVinci Resolve 19.0, we have taken efforts to keep the project libraries compatible with DaVinci Resolve 18.6.6. While this allows you to access the project library with 18.6.6, individual projects created or opened in 19.0 will no longer be accessible in 18.6.6.

It “seems” that the speed differences between Free and Studio has been “reduced”.

This isn’t to do with multi GPU benefits being brought into the Free version … just other processing speed improvements … of which there are many.

Most significantly are Codec processing speeds … and most specifically H.264 and H.265 unpacking. “2 to 3 times faster” is mentioned for the Free version. Might not need to buy Studio for “normal” processing on “normal” every-day computers. :+1:

Not going to pick any out - but there are quite a few enhancements that I know I’ll be using … and others look fun to play with.

The voice isolation tools have been significantly enhanced, and there’s voice removal now, too.

Also “instrument” controls for music, where you can enhance/reduce/remove/isolate drums/bass/guitars/etc.

All clever stuff.

The Mr Alex Tech vid, above, mentions many of the new features. (Can’t stand his style - but he does cover feature changes well.)

I currently use FCPX how difficult is it to pick up and learn. I’m very tech minded and just wondered if it will give me any benefits over Final Cut .

I’d ask … “What benefits are you looking for?”. If FCPX does everything and doesn’t leave you wanting more, then it’s probably good enough for what you want.

Resolve can do pretty much anything - albeit in different ways, quite often.

It’s powerful in terms of features that I doubt anyone is a master of them all.

The history of Resolve started with colour grading, and is considered by the industry to be a leader, with the best of other “modules” bought and added in - Fusion for compositing, and Fairlight for audio.

The best “comprehensive” beginners guide I’ve come across is this one … (albeit on v18.6 … but at beginner level there are few differences in v19) …

At 4 hrs 39 mins it’s no lightweight … but it is comprehensive and it is aimed at beginners, and doesn’t do more than mention some of the more esoteric feature where needed.

You can get going fairly quickly for the basics. To fully learn all the features will probably take a lifetime, It is a great piece of software, Available as free or paid with the paid version including lifetime updates - pay once, no subscription.

Ever since they could no longer squeeze the whole installer into a single (4GB limit) .exe … it has grown some.

I didn’t find it as intuitive as FCPX (long time iMovie then FCPX user)

Its not as quick either, but that’s more down the Apple writing software for their own machines/OS.

Give it a try and see what you think, its free afterall

That’s changed lot since DR was totally re-written for the M chips - and indeed the release that addressed this was a joint release with Mac and their new chip.

Not cheap!

Cheaper than the original Micro panel that I got, which I love, but that is far from micro! Big, heavyweight wheels and balls with a real quality feel.

Anyone else had a rise in final render fails with Windows 19 Public Beta (free version), failed 3 times out of 5?

I have noticed a slight performance increase from 18.6 but I never had a render freeze before. Just deleted the failed render and started again with exactly the same settings and it rendered ok!

Been OK for me, so far. Probably 10+ renders.
