Davinci Resove - 19 - Public Beta

Fired my computer up a few days ago and DaVinci wouldnt start. After staring at the screen and scratching my head for a minute, I noticed there was a Windoze update ready to install. Install, shutdown and restart sorted it out.:rofl::rofl:

Not had that once since when I started using back with v14.

Solved it within seconds

But it had run the last time you used it, I’m assuming, so there should be no need to update windows to keep it working.

Updating windows did indeed solve it. Dunno why ?
Anyway, I’m thinking of getting a new computer as resolve runs rather slowly on my 8yr old pile of silicon. What do others recommend as a minimum spec to run resolve these days ? ( Also thinking of upgrading to the paid version at the same time)

My laptop is 8 years old … the only probably saving grace is that it has a second Nvidia GPU (something I was actually unaware of when buying in rather a hurry after my old laptop threw in the towel in 40℃+ in Southern Italy).

Don’t rush and get Studio for performance - several things (multi GPU is one) have trickled down to free with 19.

With 19 the differences become mainly feature based rather than feature and performance based. So the benefits of spending the money may not be worth it?

This supports that …

Ahh, Alex does say you can only enable the Multi GPU in the Studio version, but yep it does look a lot faster and smoother.

Ah - yeah - It’s the video decoding/encoding I think they’ve done the most on and made available to the free.
For many, that’s been the bit that’s made things sluggish.
Certainly worth reappraising 19 before heading to Studio if that’s only for performance.
Unfortunately there were Studio only features (that remain so) that I needed that gave me no choice.

Im interested in these tiltshift videos. Only the studio version does that. Tried it on the free version and it puts a large watermark over the video. Last question, are there any LUTS out there for a DJI Mini 3 Pro to make videos look a bit more cinematic / warmer etc ? Looked on the DJI website and theres some for the MP4 but very little for the mini3pro

Just use masks and blur in the colour tab. imo, I can get a far better result, and more tailored to the scene, than the built in effect.

Never use them. I shoot Log and use the DR built in CST for DJI D-Log, then grade as needed.
LUTs can be flawed unless the originator REALLY know what he’s doing - and few do. CSTs are reliable at all times.

A quick example I did a while back …

Quite honestly, I’ve seen far more pseudo tilt-shift that look wrong than I’ve seen that look right. (Yes - my example looks “wrong” to me.)

Need a good old plate camera with adjustable lens plate orientation to really do it justice, and hence know what you’re trying to emulate, and how it should look.
Even the few modern lenses that have a form of physical tilt and shift movement can’t do the effect well, since most only move in a single direction. (OK - you can rotate the camera to some weird angle, but :man_shrugging:)

I’m not suggesting I’m a pro at it … but I have used a proper camera to do it as it was originally done, and I know that creating it really well in a modern digital format never looks good … fine as just a quirky gimmick for personal entertainment … IMO.

BUT - if you’re wanting to do it, you have FAR more control using masks/blur than by using the built in effect.

Ahh yes, I watched this video ( think you put a link up on here) Thought you were using the Studio version :wink:
Edit it was Comedy Hunter who did the video, yours was a reply to it

I do use the Studio version … but I wouldn’t use the DR Shift-Tilt effect.

More than usual being updated …

Reboot needed (Win10).

Also …

Installation Notes

  • Please install the panels firmware update to improve idle battery consumption with the DaVinci Resolve Speed Editor and Micro Color Panel.
  • If you use a Nvidia graphics card, please upgrade your driver to Studio driver 546.01 (Windows) / Studio driver 550.40.07 (Linux) or newer.

There never has been a Studio incarnation of drivers for the old Nvidia GPU in my old laptop - but there was a new “Game Ready” version.
I know I’ve had to install these updates in the past, to clear DR issues and/or error messages. Always good to keep them up to date.

Another reboot was needed (Win10) after installing the updated driver.

Maybe worth noting that version 19 will only run on 64bit computers

I looked at a few different programs before settling on Da Vinci Resolve. In ways I can’t readily explain, it just seemed a good ‘fit’ for me. Having gone over all 4+ hours of the video you recommended, I feel I can now embark on some modest projects - Steven Spielberg can rest easy, :though. slight_smile:

I did briefly consider going Pro, but as an amateur/hobbyist I feel that may be more than I need, if I’m being realistic. Anyway, once I’ve put something together that isn’t completely s**t, I’ll post it here.

I’m glad it was informative and helpful. :+1:

For 95+% of what you’ll need - the free version does everything.

The only thing that took me to the Studio version was something very specific I was doing that was nothing to do with normal/drone video … and it proved to do that job rather well then, several times since, and it will be used again within the next few weeks.
Since then I’ve made use of a few Studio features.

Im going to get a new 64bit computer at some point so I can use the version 19 :+1:

There’s not such an enormous difference between the final v18 and the (still in beta) v 19. Certainly I’d not consider the difference sufficient to justify a new computer - personally.
