Walksnail new firmware released to improve image quality. Definitely looks alot better than it did but still not at the level it needs to be in my opinion. But good to see they have reacted quickly to improve it so thats a positive
I do respect his technical breakdowns, but I have little time for his panhandling.
Looking at the internals I agree with him that the board construction is reasonable, but I think the wiring is a bit of dogs breakfast and cheap quality when you compare it to the Sky04X goggle, which I cite because they’re both similar in price.
DJI = image quality & penetration
HDZero = fixed latency & long range & open source
Walksnail = (maybe) image quality (maybe) penetration & (maybe) open source
After flying Yours and Steves wings this week I think you can add image quality to HDZero too, after not flying it for a while it looks really good to me.
Looks like open source is coming to the HDZero vtx first, then the new goggles. Something about putting the game Doom on it as well, using an elrs linked controller to play it?
Mad’s Tech review of Fatshark/Walksnail system. Theres a part where he compares Walksnail to DJI on 25mb mode and its quite surprising I still think this new system has big potential if they can sort out some of these issues
Is Ian member here?
Im not 100% sure but I dont think so
Get an invite out to him Steve
Ive messaged him with an invite Rich, hopefully he’ll join up
Though I hate to say this, but the Walksnail system still needs a lot of work if it is to surpass the DJI system.
One thing I consistently saw when the DJI and Walksnail systems were side by side was the loss of distant detail in the Walksnail image, and the ability to see close in scrag was better in the DJI system. This I think is the way Walksnail currently have the CODEC configured (or not configured optimally).
Range was also a very limiting factor of the Walksnail system. I mostly fly my DJI system at 25mW, and in similar environments that Ian was flying I would get lower latency and higher bitrate performance. Now I only have Polar Pro cameras so maybe I had an advantage with being limited to 60fps.
At the moment the only real advantage I see Walksnail having over DJI, to the vast majority of flyers, is the form factor of the goggles. In every other aspect Fatshark/Walksnail are still very much entrenched in catch-up mode.
Having choice is good. Switchable is great… though 30fps… Nah. 120 please
Just watched this video on penetration. Scan a little way in for the 4 systems
This is the sort of thing that becomes possible with open source…
Penetration is also mentioned.
30fps will be just fine for my level of freestyle
and mine
I did think there was a very obvious “look at my goggles” shot at the beginning of Vanover’s video that was posted in “Not mine” the other day but I wondered if he must be using something else.
I guess not.
Yeah it’s starting to look good this walk snail, though seems they over hear and burn out and that bricking issue… lol.
Good progress in just a few weeks. Though madstech still isn’t happy with it, but at least updates coming!
Though penetration doesn’t look as good as DJI at this point, and that’s my main thing, still, keep it up, nice to have options!
So there’s talk of hdzero being able to up the resolution with a firmware upgrade, so penetration is becoming the real thing to get right… we’ll see.
Heh yeah, you can’t get res, low latency and penetration from ONE system… Pick your preference and your system… 10gw VTX’s that’ll do it
