Looks like the Air 3 is designed to be retrofitted with a 4g/5g connection via a USB C expansion bay built in to the top of it.
Not sure how much use it would be though, since it would already be a challenge to fly beyond the O4 range without running out of battery except for flying behind obstructions such as trees I suppose.
They’ve been around for various DJI drones for a couple of years, not available to purchase directly in the UK and I suspect they’d also be firmware / GPS-location locked.
Found this outfit that appear to supply the dongle but there are a few comments that bother me ie no returns and needs an annual subscription from DJI after 1st year
They do however supply some genuine DJI that some may find useful.
I know that cellular dongles in drones is nothing new but it was never allowed in the UK due to regulations. I gather this has changed but I still can not see what the use case for this sort of device would be as VOLS will still need to be maintained.
£129 for the dongle + £19 for the mounting kit for the Mini 4 Pro. Will take it over 249g which defeats the reasons for buying the Mini in the first place.
So far, flying within VLOS I have never lost signal.
Will this just be for the later ie mini 4 pro & air 3 O4 transmission or I wonder if they’ll offer one for the rc pro O3 + where the dongle goes in the back of the rc
Rich, the dongle connects to the drone itself (nothing connects to the controller) and is used when OcuSync doesn’t work (eg. out of range). Your controller would need an internet connection to work with the dongle.
This bit of the small print is interesting:
I wonder how much they charge for the annual service subscription?
that’s the only application I can think off but the drone’s this device is for is hardly the sort of drone that would get that authorisation - generally the BVLOS drones are the parcel flying box type but I guess there might be a use case for it here.
Ah ok thanks for that, yes I wonder how much the subscription as well
It was just a pot luck guess as the said controller has the 4G capabilities, just see your post above,
I did read ages ago that the use of 4G dongle not available to work in this country ( with the rc pro ) so I’m wondering how that works if & where allowed & if an internet connection is needed or have I missed something.
Edit Mavic 3 not available in this country ah well
You could hotspot your RC to your mobile phone to get it on the internet, on the assumption DJI would allow that to work with the dongle on the aircraft
