“There’s no difference between the Ocusync 4 and the 4G signal”. Well, the meaningless bar charts are both showing full signal strength, but that doesn’t make the signals in any sense the same…
Where did you get that “quote” from @speedracer66 ?
I didn’t say anything like that at all ![]()
It’s a quote from the video… 5:30 in.
There’s quite a few videos in this thread ![]()
Was it the VLOS rules one by Gavin? Or one of his earlier dongle reviews?
The one you were commenting on… ![]()

Apparently you are not allowed to use a normal data SIM in a drone as it can adversely affect the network in the area you are flying.
Ofcom say you shouldn’t. I’ve seen nothing to suggest it won’t work. I have friends who have forgotten more about 4G/5G than I would ever want to know, but I think the technical explanation is hokey. Having a 4G radio in a drone is no different to having one at the top of a hill or a tall building.
Are you sure about that Colin? ![]()
How is using a 4G modem stuck to the top of a drone any different from the GPS tracker in my car using a 4G modem? ![]()
Or my tractor using a 4G sim in an IoT device to stream realtime harvest data out? ![]()
Or my DJI RC streaming live to Facebook? ![]()
Or… ![]()
Do you have a source for that please @Bazza55 ?
From ofcom.
No Rich, I’m honestly a 65 yr old dead head that ![]()
didn’t want to bore everyone with the full facts, but this website explains it better than I could.
If there is a loophole, I’m sure you’ll find it. ![]()
I did notice that OFCOM say it’s because using a dongle at height means the dongle transmits to more mobile phone towers. I wondered how come the police etc, can triangulate the position of a mobile phone ? Surely my mobile phone is transmitting ( and receiving) from more than one tower at a given time ? Sounds like a bit of an excuse from OFCOM.
It’s the shit it’s sending back to Google you have to worry about ![]()
They know your precise position at any given time
Now where did I leave that tinfoil
I reckon my missus must work for Google ![]()

Does this not make RID illegal without a licence ![]()
Dunno Wayne, what does the drone and controller use to transmit RID ? ( and if they are already using 4g, then why try to sell a 4g dongle ?)
RID is transmitted over WiFi.
But you won’t be where the position data says you are…
I’ve seen/ read of cases where the police have got approximate positions of a suspects phone off mobile phone providers. They’ve been able to say at least the suspects phone was at/ near a crime scene.
@PingSpike See the video at the link I posted plus:
All the time
Had a misper a few weeks ago and they were able to tell what he’d done on his phone especially social media and their Google account to within a few feet, then backed up woth cctv in that London
