DJI Mavic Mini rear propeller screws coming loose

Again, propeller screw bolts coming loose resulting in ‘Propellers spinning too fast, land immediately’. The problem can presumably be cured with threadlock (aren’t they what Rastas have?), which I’ve ordered off Amazon having just wasted an hour I’ll never get back finding that neither B&M nor Wickes stock this stuff. So, just a general interest question about this; why is it only the rear props that are affected? The front ones stay put but the rear ones seem to want to make a break for the border. Can’t be the rotation, since they rotate in opposite directions on each side of the drone.

Or, to put it a different way, why don’t the front prop screw bolts work themselves loose? Anybody else had this, or are the gods of rotation singling me out for punishment? I even checked the fixing screw bolts for the rear arms in case they were loose and inducing extra vibration (they weren’t). I don’t like mysteries, especially ones that for all I know could possibly be signs of a deeper problem, and prefer explanations!

Which model drone?

Bugger, never thought of that. And it’s only a few yards from Wickes; closed by the time I went out, though. But open tomoz; that said, Bezos’ boys reckon they can deliver tomoz, which is a bit on the breezy side in Cardiff so i’m not missing much.

Not the Mini 2, the Mavic Mini. The whirlygigs are slightly different I believe…

Not having much luck

Without knowing the history of it, it could be why original owner got shut

I would follow the advice on the other thread you commented on and replace the 4 props and screws with new ones.
This is also advice that DJI recommend

You’ve had nothing but problems with the Mavic Mini models since starting the hobby, John :pensive:

Given you have as few flying opportunities as you do, it sounds like it’s just costing you flight time and valuable flight experience.

Why are you still using it when you have a perfectly good and far superior Mini 2?

If I remember correctly, the prop retaining screws are different between the Mini and the Mini 2 - have you got the correct screws fitted ?? Just a thought

A perfectly cromulent suggesion, Jhdee. As well as threadlock, I’ll buy it a new set of replacement props from DJI. And check carefully for some time to come that the screw bolts remain tight!

(5 mins later) DJI are out of stock, and probably not making spares for Mavic Mini any more anyway come to think of it. Ordered 3rd party off Amazon, £2 cheaper and should be ok touch wood!

Hi there, I’m from Barry! :+1:

Might be worth trying your replacements without the threadlock first… can’t think I’ve heard anybody else say the prop screws have been working themselves loose on a DJI, nor of anybody using threadlock on one, so hopefully new props/screws will do the job. :crossed_fingers:

Also @TheJohnster if you’ve brought thread lock please make sure its the blue kind and not the red kind…

I still think as suggested above DJI replacement props is the way forward as these come with pre threadlocked screws as well as the props. Using your own liquid thread lock has a chance to make it’s way into the motor windings…

Thread lock is the devil’s work, it comes in many guises
if you use the good stuff then that’s the end of you changing the props again

As I stated above change the props as its probably them causing the error and at the same time change the screws with new ones as per DJI’s recommendation

wont threadlock or locktite make propellers brittle?

Buy the real DJI props, they come with screws and the correct type of threadlock already applied. If yo insist on using your own threadlock make sure it is low strength, and the type that cures in the air. Aplly a tiny amount and let it cure on the screw before fitting. The other typres only cure in the abscence of air meaning if you apply too much it can dribble into your motor!!!
What aftermarket props did you get @TheJohnster ? Have you got a link?

I’m very sorry to hear that, Dubi; I’m from Roath, which is nearly as bad…

Shit, bought red threadlock, haven’t used any yet though so that’s all right…

I tried to buy DJI replacement props but DJI are out of stock, so they are not available no matter how good an idea they are. And since they are apparently not producing the Mavic Mini any more I have little hope that the replacement props will ever become available again; the storage & management of stocks of spare parts for obsolete items is viewed as an unneccessary overhead by most modern companies.

I think the way forward for now is to replace all the Mavic Mini props with the new Amazon 3rd party props & screw bolts but without using threadlock (this would be a threadlock holiday, see what I did there?), and keep a close eye on them for a while. At least I have plenty replacements now, and a whole new crap screwdriver, let joy be unconfined…

Or do away with all the hassle, sell the Mavic Mini and just use the Mini 2?

Ultimately, yes.

Time to come clean. I crashed the Mini 2 and broke the front left arm, bought a replacement, and I think I’ve mucked up soldering the replacement’s wiring to the board inside the drone, so I’m waiting for pension day to send it off for repair. At the moment it is not charging up properly and will not start. There is only one person to blame for this, the tree I backed into was only doing what trees do, if the repair soldering is bad that’s down to the nut holding the soldering iron. Me.

In the meantime the Mavic will have to do, and I’ve had a few successful flights with it. Once the 2 is back up & flying, it is a quantum better drone, but the poor wifi connectivity of the Mavic Mini is good practice and discipline; it’s not all negative.
