Maybe I am alone in this train of thinking, but as long as you are not ‘breaking the law, breaking the law’ … and you are not modding any ‘non-servicable parts’ - then surely, you can do stuff like add a set of after market props.
As a modder (not drones, but everything), I take risks, but “this” is not a mod - and I am pretty sure anyone, including authorities, my Mum, and those offering warranties would deem the same.
@ clinkadink I have sent an email to the CAA…to see if using propellers of a third party manufacturer is ok if not original or recommended by the manufacturer…despite the CAA stating that original or manufacturer recommended parts must be used…if you stand by what you say…and third party parts are ok to be used…then I am sure the CAA would be interested in your view…that third party parts can be used…after all you should back up what you preach… the part about voiding guarantee was a reply to MartG 1960 and his take on cars…I don’t make the rules…and don’t enforce them…that’s for the CAA …and anyone who disagrees with the rules should put it to the CAA…but then I doubt they will… it comes down to all mouth no trousers…
Your reply will be the CAA ‘recommends’ which is what is clearly already stated. A recommendation is not a rule. If it was a rule the word recommended would not be there before should.
Joys of English language and legal wording. It’s intentionally vague.
I can recommend a place to get new tyres for your car. You might choose to go elsewhere.
Try to think of the Mini2 as being the equivalent of a basic Vauxhall Astra. Vauxhall spent a fair few quid in developing the car so that it drove efficiently and safely. Then comes Kevin, and Kevin thinks he knows more than the Vauxhall technicians, and proceeds to add some soffit boards around the side, fits some Super-Wide-Fandango wheels, and fires the Halfords useless parts canon at it. A few days later Kevin’s Airfix kit is on its way to the crusher.
Just like cars if you make a significant change to a drone, even if it’s just some different props, then you should expect to make some changes to other parts of the power train. This could involve changing the PID Loop, altering the Karman Filter parameters. This is why we builders and freestylers appear to spend more time under the hood than flying.
Three bladed props may give the Mini better response in the curves and increased punch out, but does a camera drone really need this, at the cost of less battery life, and most Mini owners want the longest flying time possible.
With FPV drones we will fly 3bladed props to increase agility and response, whether that be in a racing environment or for some chaotic freestyle fun. BUT if we want to do some long range cruising at low revs we generally fit two bladed props as they are more efficient in this powerband.
To conclude if you want the bling factor with the possibility of some unexpected flight issues fit three blades, if the Mini is doing everything you want it to, and repeatedly, stick with two blades.
