DJI Neo - Rumours, leaks, gossip and general discussion

On a different note.

Mine arrived safely this morning.

However I’m 2,400+ miles away from home, so I’ll have to wait until Thursday to give it a go. :rage:

That’s BVLOS, for sure!

F#£&@G size of the box mate don’t it come with the crash guards on :joy:

It’s probably due to the Free DJI Base Ball Cap.

Maybe they’ve seen my video of crashing the Avata 2 into my head and they’ve sent me a crash helmet instead.:crazy_face::crazy_face:

I succumbed to temptation and bought one, received it yesterday. First impressions really good for something this small at this price, great build quality, tons of features and choices on how to control it.

But…this is billed as a “selfie drone” like the Hoverair, right? Has anyone worked out how to actually take a selfie?!

I can take loads of video shots like dronie easily enough. But I just want it to pull back a bit and take an old school still photo. On my Hoverair that is just a dronie with the camera mode switched from Video to Photo. There is a section in the DJI Fly settings for Dronie that says “Video”, I assumed I just change that to Photo. But the app doesn’t let me change the camera mode it is just fixed on “Video” and greyed out, can’t change it.

I can take photos in manual mode but for basic selfies I really just want to palm launch and watch it go while I focus on making myself look pretty.

Everything else works exactly as expected, I’m really impressed but this is the one thing I use the Hoverair for most.

Has anyone figured this out? Am I just being thick?

Not sure but is it done by voice activation??

I vids I have seen use voice to control the Neo, not had the weather to try mine yet

Apparently it is possible to set the drone to video or photo in the Fly app. Presumably, you have to connect the drone to a mobile phone and use the Fly app there. :+1:

Using your phone, the Fly app allows you to select photo or video as you would on any other DJI drone controlled by the Fly app. The shutter button is as per video start button :+1:

Yes I can get it to take a photo using the app in manual fly mode, but then you are just taking a photo of you using the app :man_facepalming:

I want to use the same hands free quick shots that work for video, just have it take a still.

I know it is early days but I must have watched at least 10 YT video reviews today and not one of them took a still photo. A bunch of them even did a head to head comparison with the Hoverair, to the point of taking the same video shot on each, but again not one even mentioned still photos at any point. Weird!

After watching the tutorial for smart shots, I think you can change the mode from Video to Photo, before setting the drone off to preform its manoeuvres.

I’m not able to test it yet myself

That is the button I was referring to, it is always greyed-out so you can’t change it. It definitely looks like it should work it just doesn’t :disappointed:

I see that all the modes are the same, Video-only. I know it makes less sense to do a Circle or Follow with photos, but Dronie or Rocket definitely does. They have done all the heavy lifting programming the flight paths and tracking, seems nuts not to just take a photo at key points rather than continuous video.

So do please let me know here if it works for you, cheers

They’ll be a Dji Neo Barbie pink addition next

Have a YT search for Captain Drone - in his review he does take photos :+1:

In order to get access to the video/photo selection you need to connect your mobile and use the Fly app. When in the Fly app you must perform a few flights in auto mode to be able to unlock manual mode - where you can fly the Neo with virtual (on screen) sticks. Once manual mode is activated you will be able to change from video to photo. Check this video out from time point 16.30 - not the greatest video but at 16,30 it shows how to access manual mode and change photo/video selection

Check out page 33 of the Neo User Manual :+1:

Thanks everyone for the tips and review links, I really appreciate all the effort!

Unfortunately these last two videos do show taking photos, but only in Manual Mode, not from the much faster pre-programmed palm-launch quick shots.

Manual mode means I have to fly the drone manually to the position I want, line up the shot, then hide the phone behind my back or similar and hope I manage to hit the shutter button in the app. All of which does work of course, but is quite slow and fiddly.

On my Hoverair I just switch it on, select Dronie (assuming I already switched the default for Dronie to Photo in the app previously), press the takeoff button and wait. Drone pulls up and back, takes 3 photos, comes back and lands in my hand, the whole thing takes about 20 seconds. For simple selfies or group shots that is perfect, no messing around, in and out, minimal annoyance to anyone else who is around.

Example from the Waverley Abbey meetup:

The Neo has all the same quick shot buttons on the drone itself and palm launch/land. I can do exactly what I can with the Hover…but only for videos :face_with_symbols_over_mouth: I just can’t believe that DJI could be so dumb as to miss such an obvious function.

Thanks again for the tips everyone, the quest continues!

Send DJI feedback about it, they love to hear users ideas and experiences, I did see that DOBO mentioned that some of the hand gestures will be coming in an update, well I am sure it was on one of his videos I watched, it would make sense, that way you won’t need to connect your phone for a quick selfie, I watched that many videos last week on the NEO

Watching this with interest. The videos of manual mode look impressive especially indoors (could be fun in winter).

I’m curious to see if they will release backwards compatibility with the googles integra and fpv controller 2 - if they do I may buy one

The owners manual says it’s not suitable for continuous high speed flight.

This YT video proves something else.
