Do I need a GVC to fly a +2KG drone?

Do i need the gvc to fly an inspire drone? Or anything similar over 2kg? Or can one be flown in the A3 Open Catagory? Might end up editng this question

@Hotrodspike you’ve got an inspire what certificates do you have if you dont mind me asking?

There is no such thing as a stupid question, New Wave, but there are plenty of stupid answers.

Cheers i thought id invoke my inner johnster :see_no_evil: and ask away. Killed anymore seagulls yet?

The drone code has the answer

Point 19

Haven’t killed even one seagull yet, not for lack of wanting to, horrible things. But they’ve ignored me and my drone since murdering my Mini 2SE, so there seems to be an uneasy truce between us, and I’ve returned the favour and ignored them. There were several dozen of them infesting the moat at Caerphilly Castle the other day, and none of them reacted to my drone in the slightest; neither did the geese, which I was more worried about.

We’ve given each other some pretty hard stares, though. I don’t want the 'stards thinking they’ve lulled me into any sort of false sense of security…

Jack @new_wave_24 don’t forget to use Good 2 Go too, it will answer all your what / where you can fly questions:

So the answer is yes. Depending on where and for what reason. The second being insurance related.

This is where i do alot of my flying. Yes i know its a screen shot of drone assist :imp: its a massive area but i see alot of helicopters flying over. Specically this area. I dont kbiw what they are checking but in the last year or so ive aeen them a few times. Big yellow things. Im getting off course a little bit here but theres two questions really. Are these helicopters part of a notam that i can check? If im flying my air2s i just land straight away and im flying close and slow anyways. If i started practicing with an inspire id have to be much much higher up. I guess i saying that i need to take a bit more responsibility to when and how i fly thats all. Just dont kniw how to make that next step

You can fly an Inspire in A3 open category.

Or recreationally under an Article 16 (e.g. FPVUK)

Outside of that you need an operational authorisation from the CAA (i.e. the GVC)

It can get complicated … Good to Go is really helpful

With the caveat of location limits (although the field mentioned would tick this box)

The yellow and black helis are probably the National Grid inspection EC135s based in Bristol. Used to check for problems on the power lines.

Cheers john. They come down pretty low or what seems low to me anyways. They should hire me to do it :grinning:. Are they timetabled and searchable inadvance do you know?

They track the National Grid high-voltage lines at about 200ft, and can be doing so quite fast … so if you’re not near one of them they won’t be coming near you.

I flew my Inspire before I had the GVC qual, the only reason I took it was because I was going to use it professionally which didn’t happen. Still up for sale if you want it.

Cheers @TheJohnster are you ai?

@OzoneVibe what app or website are you using in those screen shots?

Yeah i am. Maybe. I think id get more use out of a new mavic though. Theres quite a few inspires 1 and 2 on ebay for decent prices.
