My flying confidence took another knock a few days ago. I thought I would give the Holy Stone another try before using my Mini 3 Pro. I live next to a wood, so I went in the garden, used automatic take off, great, but then it started drifting to one side and was getting higher and higher nothing on the transmitter seemed to work and it disappeared into the woods. I felt sick with worry so I ran into the woods and there it was stuck in a bushy tree, reachable without a ladder. Wow, I felt relieved especially after my original one did similar, drifted and crashed onto our roof. I thought it was lost or worse crashed into some walkers or something.
Now I have the Mini 3 Pro I think the bin is the best place for it. But now I am really nervous to fly again, Just waiting for nicer weather and a local farmer said I can use one of his fields, a nice open space. Just waiting to get my confidence back.
I don’t know much or if at all about this particular drone so just a thought, did you have a good gps / satellite lock would you know ?
To me but I could be wrong sounds like a possibility it had no gps lock,
Just make sure you have a good gps lock & all should be good, if when you get flying again if at anytime you get nervous or whilst the drone is airborne rather remember you can just let go of the sticks, let it hover whilst you regain your confidence less the nerves & start again, these are rock solid drones usually once they have a good gps lock, however if on a windy day maybe more out in the open is best with less obstacles around you like trees etc or if you don’t feel confident go back when less windy, especially being a sub 250g drone,
Yes to the above no disrespect stick with the DJI & i’m 99.9% sure you will be fine,
Not going off topic but some of the best motocross riders, super bikes & car drivers are the ones that crashed ( that could get up walk away & get straight back on it & carry on !)
Try not to over think it
Thanks Richard. It needs at least 12 gps sats to fly and I had a lot more than that. They have a reputation for having to replace a lot of drones I am led to believe from HS forums. Get a good one they seem to work quite well, nothing even comparable to DJI though in all respects. I am very confident with the DJI as I know how good they are, it is my confidence in flying that took a knock, I will be fine when it fades to a distant memory.
Thanks for listening, I was reluctant to post this experience, but now glad I did.

Internet rules, video proof or it didn’t happen ;o)
No problem @milkmanchris. I didn’t photograph it, I was just so relieved it didn’t hit anyone or cause damage, photographing it was the last thing on my mind. I do have a pic of the first drone that flew off out of control and crashed onto our roof when the only control that worked was the kill switch. Shall I delete the post?
Not at all, we jest
Always worth hitting record when you set off though for all eventualities
@milkmanchris You are so right about recording. Sorry, I missed the jest as I am still a bit worried by it all. 2 out of 3 crashes with this drone
More Holy Shit than HolyStone
So you have a friendly farmer Repay him once you have got your confidence back by offering to take pictures of his crops or whatever; a good, open place to fly is valuable!
If you haven’t flown it already I think you will find that the DJI Mini 3 is a world apart from the HolyStone. Watch some YouTube videos, our own @ianinlondon produces some very useful instructional stuff
Don’t rush things and enjoy yourself. Hope it goes well!
Hi thre,
I do not know what the drone is like that you flew but I do know what a DJI 3 Pro is like. I have one and @FoleyMrs. Switch on and leave till the satalites are found and I have found them really stable. I am very happy with them. Just remember when flying and using the sensors do not go sideways. Think of a horse with blinkers on. They can navigate through things upon approcahing them but can not see things next to them. If you are worried in the settings you can disable sideways flight. This will help you avoid sideways collisions. When you get to fly it. Set yourself a task rather then just fly. For example, if there are a couple of hay bales, say, I will fly to that one… turn right… fly to that one and then come home and land. Take it easy. Remember that the sensors are disabled on the sports mode but for a confidence builder run it on the cine mode. It will go nice and slow. For the first few times if you are nervous try to fly with minimal obsticles on the ground. This means if you do have a little nervous knock. Bring it down, land and walk to it. Remember landing in long grass can damage props. As you get to know the mini 3 pro you will get rid of confidence concerns. Always be cautious when flying. Do not get OVER confident. And mostly, if you have things next to you, avoid sideways travel (don’t ask how I know)… I am sure the tree was moving sideways.
Don’t give in. Mini 3 Pro are great. I love it.
This happened to me last year.. I took off without spotting the ’ No GPS ’ notification and the drone just drifted off sideways.
@macspite Thanks Robert, I have watched all Ian’s videos for the Mini 3 pro and they are really first class. I am lucky the farmer is a friend of mine. All other farmers around here are looking down on drones at the moment because one farmer saw a drome flying very low and looking around his farmyard and they next night he was burgled and had valuable machinery stolen.

@uav_hampshire thanks, I had good signals, battery and plenty of GPS sats. and this was the replacement drone after the first drifted and crashed. hence my reluctance to fly at the moment. Also we have a new puppy so not much time either. I am now going to stick solely with DJI.
Thanks … Rod
Thank you for some very good advice Russ @Foley. I have watched all the videos, learnt as much as I can, I just got to do it now.

All you gotta do is take it a step at a time. You are in control and you are the person who determines how fast and slow you go. I am not aware of the drone you had and as others have said which I agree with. Set your return to home point height so that all obsticles are avoided, never take off under anything as if it returns to home it may attempt to get through the “thing” you are under. Not always good. Also it is just easier to have nothing above the drone. Once you start up, make sure that you have enough satalies (satalites go white) and that your home point is updated. Your satalies are what will hold it steady, without them the drone will drift with wind. The satalies will keep in in place even with wind. (not too much wind though) everything has a limit. You will know if you see it unstable.
You WILL learn to trust what it (and you) can do. Take little steps. Each time. Do a little more until you feel you are where you want to be. And remember, get a photo, post it here to this community as we are interested to see your pics. I love to see pictures from people who are new to a drone too as I know how much the first pic can mean. Even if you got a wheely bin in the middle of the pic, that is an acomplishment.
If you you get a pic and think… they would not want to see that. Send me a DM with it. I will have a look. I am no photographer (I am lucky with the odd shot now and again ha ha). But I am interested
Enjoy your drone.
Thanks Russ, I have a lot of confidence in the Mini 3 Pro and feel quite happy now after all the kind words on here. I only bought the HS to see if I got on with drone flying, after the first incident I bought the Mini 3 Pro and wish I never gave the replacement HS another go.

Well hope one day we will cross paths and have a flight.
You made the right choice to go for the DJI. I had previously flown a friends holy stone without problem and decided I wanted one. I went to a local shop that sells radio controlled everything to see if they had one. They did, but Alun the owner talked me out of it and recommended the mini 2. I thought he was just trying to increase his profit. Fast forward a few weeks and I meet up with a work colleague who pulls out his holy stone to show it off, he didn’t know I also had a drone. After 20 minutes of messing about he eventually got it to take off, up to about 40 feet. It then decided to fly off on its own and narrowly missed crashing. After regaining some kind of control he brought it back, although the return was all over the place. 2mtrs forward, 1mtr sideways, 1mtr backwards I had a shot of it and it was horrible. I then pulled out my mini 2 and sent her up, the difference was like night and day. He had a shot too, and immediately wished he had never bought the HS. Two weeks later he had a mini 2 and the HS was put back in its box, never to be seen again!!!
Your confidence will multiply 100 fold on your first flight, as soon as you realise the Mini 3 pro does exactly what you tell it to do and not fly off into buildings or trees on its own accord!!!
I am DJI all the way now. Not been comfortable with the few i have managed to get hands on.
My first proper drone was a Parrot, nice but it tended to go to great heights uncontrolled and drop out of the sky, last one I demanded my money back. Threatened them with Visa chargeback and got it. Now I have Mavic Platinum and Mini 2. Use Mini 2 most, rock solid. I have crashed it of course but am better now. Amazing toys, how do they do it !! See my brilliant video on Aviemore Loch, that will keep you awake !!
