Drone insurance (non-commercial) on home insurance

I’ve recently got my first drone, a DJI mini 3 pro and have been looking at options for insurance. I’m a member here and have seen the links (and discounts) for the specialist providers and also looked at the DJI Care Refresh plan.

I get my home & contents insurance through NFU Mutual, so I asked them what it would cost to include my new drone. It turns out it is around £5.50 a year, to include damage, loss (flyaways, lost at sea, etc.) and public liability. (Though I didn’t increase the latter; so it’s £2.5 million - I realise some of the specialists are higher). There’s a £50 excess on any claim.

This seems to be much cheaper than the specialists. Am I missing something? Should I join the DJI Care Refresh program, too?

If you make a claim on your home insurance, your premiums will increase for the next five years.

You’ll need to declare that claim to any other home insurance provider that you move to in the next five years too.

I’d suggest the cost of that home insurance price rise for the next five years would be more than the cost of a new drone. It’ll certainly be more than the cost of an insurance policy from a specialist drone provider.

I put my mavic air 2 on my home insurance year before last my personal pref, however last year I lost it in a lake, through my own fault, I did claim off my home insurance who paid out the full amount & any bills I’d spent on it, I just got my renewed policy, I thought it would jump right up as they paid out 1450£ ish, it has gone up this year but only 15p a month , but I’m just speaking from my experience & with Barclays so I’m not advising which is best ! I guess it’s swings & roundabouts ….

Thanks for that. I’ve made a claim previously for a mobile phone and that one put it up by about £5 - they’ll tell you in advance how much it will go up if you make a claim, which is useful.

Crikey! Can’t complain about that

Sounds like you might have your answer already then

One further thought. Your home insurance public liability cover will not be valid for any commercial flying work. Commercial PLI must meet the requirements of EC Regulation 785/2004 and is only offered by specialist drone insurers - eg Coverdrone. I don’t fly commercially but went with Coverdrone rather than DJI Care Refresh having compared policy excesses eg in the event of a flywaway etc. They then offer commercial insurance by the day, if needed.

A valid point @Dormouse but thankfully as per topic title, and per Hobbyist and Recreational Drone Insurance Comparison chart, @AdrianR is only looking for non-commercial insurance
