Drone pilot pleads guilty to endangering historic aircraft

Someone has already done an analysis bearing in mind the drone body is likely to be 3 or less inches thick and the diameter of a hurricane tail wheel is 16 inches.

Cool, where?

Saw it briefly on faceache, but scrolled past.

Which of course means you’ll never see it again… I’ve had that happen many times!

Man flew drone dangerously close to fighter plane while no-fly zone was in place https://metro.co.uk/2023/03/02/man-flew-drone-close-to-fighter-plane-while-no-fly-zone-was-in-place-18375822/ via @MetroUK

“Flight safety officer Matthew Moore said there would have ‘without a doubt been fatalities’ had the drone collided with the plane.”

Without a doubt? Really?

Well the drone would have died.

It would have needed new props, at least. I wonder if Refresh Care covers Hurricane damage…

The moron flying the drone deserves what he received…

but…
While it may be a theoretical possibility given some circumstances , I think his statement is a tad extreme to say they least… Especially as he is a flight safety officer and should be accustomed to assessing risks and their outcome.

Cause damage to the plane, drop drone parts on bystander, maybe …

but to say Without doubt causing fatalities, leave plenty of room to question his statement and or judgement.

Conversation with his insurance company…

No, I didn’t say it was windy

Exactly.

Dont forget that Hurricanes are not all metal. They are fabric covered so hitting a wing say could create a lot problems.

There are clearly some very serious possible outcomes. The guy’s an idiot and got what he deserved, but “there would have ‘without a doubt been fatalities’” is hyperbole designed to get the beak to throw the book at him. “had the drone collided with the plane, there could have been serious consequences - including fatalities to aircrew and/or spectators”.

“First time ive seen that specific charge… VLOS”
You’ll be seeing a lot, lot more as I said some months ago but no one semed interested… that was a warning, next one will be imprisonment without it being suspended I imagine…

Depends on which Mk the Hurricane is, as there were only a few remaining fabric covered wing aircraft at the start of WWII, an all metal stressed wing was introduced in April 1939 and was used on all subsequent aircraft manufactured. Apart from that the Hurricane was renowned for being able to sustain a significant amount of battle damage and still fly.

Still doesn’t excuse the muppet who decided to fly his drone even though a NOTAM was in place.

The Hurricane in question is the very last one ever constructed.

BBC coverage, little bit closer in this frame

“I can only thank God that no collision occurred”

God and maths. It’s a very small drone, a very big sky and an aircraft with a very slim frontal profile. The chances of a collision are actually remarkably small. Higher than the zero probability if he hadn’t been there - which he shouldn’t have been - but statistically probably not much higher.

I have operated a aerial camera in close proximity to a Hurricane myself, for less than the price of a Mini 3 Pro. Sadly, I didn’t get to keep the aerial camera platform.
