New Feature

• Co-ordinates and what3words added to all Parking and Take Off And Landing markers

Requested by @pcaouolte

Paul asked if we could add co-ordinates or what3words addresses to each of the additional markers that we display on the map.

This would be beneficial to those who wish to enter the details in to their satnav, as the parking location could be some distance away from the actual location or point of interest.

Each new marker that gets added to the map will now automatically create a what3words reference for the marker.

We also backfilled the several thousand Parking and Take Off And Landing markers that were already in Drone Scene

Here’s how the markers used to look:

And here’s how they look now:

Thanks for the feature request @pcaouolte - it’s a really useful addition to Drone Scene!

New Feature

• Edit your own Locations

– Requested by @Kirky

Rich @Kirky asked us recently if we could add in the ability for people to be able to edit their own locations on the map.

This is often handy if you miss a piece of information off your description or if you spot a spelling mistake.

Or, if you need to change a YouTube link. Not mentioning any names… @D0c.Col

Naturally you can only edit your own entries, and you’ll have a 60 minute edit window after you’ve added a new location in which to make any changes. This 60min edit window is because our Discourse forum suite imposes some post-editing restrictions so we’ve had to align with those.

If you are within the time window to edit your location, a new link will appear here, along with the time that the edit window will close:

You’ll then enter a new Edit Location section.

In here, you can move the marker pin, change the location title, edit the description, change your YouTube link, and so on.

When you edit a location on Drone Scene, the corresponding forum post will also be updated with your new changes, so you only need to edit the entry on Drone Scene and the forum will take care of itself

If you need to edit a location after the edit window has passed, click the “Report this location” link.

UI / UX Change :desktop_computer:

• Location name moved in to the pop-up header

When you click on a location pin on the map, a pop-up window titled “Location Details” used to open and show you the details of the location.

We’ve tidied this up a bit in this update and the blue header bar now contains the name of the location, rather than the words “Location Details”.

This more compact window is now much nicer when using mobile devices.

UI / UX Change :desktop_computer:

• YouTube link for competitions visible all the time

On the Competitions page of Drone Scene, the link to the live draw on YouTube used to only be visible when the draw entires had closed.

It would also disappear again when the live draw was over.

We’ve made a minor change in this update to enable the live draw video on YouTube to be accessible at any time.

Bug Fix :beetle:

• Pop-up windows were not always visible when the map was in full screen mode on iOS

– Reported by @SparkyFPV

When using iOS and the map in full screen mode, clicking on some location markers saw the popup window open behind the full screen map, rather than in front of it, meaning that you couldn’t see the popup until you exited full screen mode.

This iOS bug has been fixed.

Other Random Stuff :palm_tree:

• Created some rate-limiting functionality to better manage forum cross-posting

When someone adds a Parking marker to a location, or a Take Off And Landing marker, this information is cross-posted here to the forum.

Similarly, when people click “I want to fly here”, a similar post is made on their behalf to the forum.

Sometimes people would get a bit carried away with their clicking and the forum would get a little bit “spammed” with posts

We don’t want you to stop adding markers, nor do we want you to stop adding locations to your list of places you want to fly.

To combat this “forum spamming” issue we have implemented some code which will only share your intentions to the forum once during any six hour window.

For example, if @SparkyFPV adds 23 locations to his list of places he wants to fly, only the first one of that session will be announced to the forum. No further notifications will be sent to the forum from @SparkyFPV until six hours has passed.

We might tweak that six hour window in the future, but for now it should make things much quieter without putting people off adding things
