Earwig goes digital (at last)

The Nazgul is back to being fully operational, albeit with a question-mark over the ELRS receiver range. But I’ve flashed the VTX to the latest WS version, same as the goggles (goggles were actually supplied with the latest FW on), and it no longer moans at me about the version mismatch.

Now the Darwin79…

I’ve got it all wired up (pretty sure it’s all correct) but it will not bind to the goggles. I’ve successfully flashed the firmware, and confirmed that in the text file on the VTX, so everything’s on the latest “stable” (37.42.5). Here’s the deal:

  1. Power everything on - VTX shows flashing green LED
  2. Press bind button on VTX - LED goes solid red
  3. Press bind button on goggles - goggles beep briefly, LED on VTX flashed green twice, then goes off, then comes back on, flashes green once slowly, then starts rapidly flashing green. Goggles say “Tranmitter not connected”.

As far as I know, I’ve done everything right. Even if I’ve muxed ip the TX & RX connections to the FC, the binding and camera feed should work, right? It’s clearly working to a certain extent as the FW flash seems to have been successful.

The camera is hardwired in, so that’s definitely connected, and I’ve connected the antenna and screwed the cover plate back on.

It’s almost like the bind is successful but the VTX then reboots and forgets. Not sure what else to try. Anyone got any bright ideas?

could it be lack of power and resets when it tries to transmit? what VTX is this btw - cannot tell if nano or V2?

Nano Kit V3, should be good for 3v - 13v and it’s being given 5v.

Yes :+1:

This sounds like the transmitter part of the PCB is at fault, unfortunately this seems to be the most common problem with Walksnail VTX’s
Try another unit, see what happens

I don’t currently have another unit, I only bought two to get me going, I’m not made of money.

As it happens, I’ve already emailed CADDX support to see what they say. I suppose I could also raise a pre-emptive return ticket with Drone Authority. It’s that tricky business of, “I couldn’t have known it was faulty until I fitted it,” vs. “But you’ve soldered it.” We shall see.

And just because…

AI seems to have a different idea about how a snail might wear a top hat, but it’s still pretty freaky.

But the fact that your walksnail has four legs and is walking isn’t freaky in the slightest :flushed:

I tried a few iterations of this, but that was by far the best walking snail it managed. It also originally had a cane, which I have rather clumsily removed, because for some reason it thought that it should be holding the cane in its mouth. :man_shrugging:

Ooh, and CADDX have just replied - they think it’s not getting enough current and are recommending a 5v-2A BEC. I might have some of those somewhere…

…damn, they’re 5V step-up converters. More shopping. And I’ll have to get extra stuff, because I’m not spending £3-5 postage on £6 worth of parts.

OK, I’ll shut up and leave now (come on I managed to sit on it for nearly a day, new record)

2A seems overkill tbh - I have a couple of them running on AIO with 5V/1.5A BEC (with gps and elrs RP-1) without problem. Mind you those LED’s you have also take quite a bit of power too - maybe worth trying without those to confirm this is the issue.

Reasonable shout but same with LEDs disconnected, unfortunately.

I have a 2A BEC arriving tomorrow, although I’ll probably not have any tinker time until Sunday.

Woo! It arrived before lunch so I slapped it on and it works.

That’s great , lesson to be learnt here,

It’s not just how much water you’ve got, it’s how big the pipe is.

Thinking back to my ‘Moonlight’ problems, did I give enougth thought to the supply capabilities :man_running:

GODDAMMIT! I jumped a month too soon. :astonished:

Could’ve saved myself a packet!

Just kidding - really happy with the Goggles X.
