A quick question to chatgpt asking it to analyse existing NOTAM’s and to highlight any runway closures at all international airports in the Midlands, came back with more EMA opportunities to fly there @LE60LAD and @Airlessmean
East Midlands Airport (EGNX)
Upcoming scheduled closures
Planned runway maintenance closures are published for 10:00–18:00 local time on selected dates. The published schedule includes:
This year is out as I have already booked the rest of my holiday allowance with work but mmm Jan / Feb could be a plan and with the 360 drone and I can work on that full runway waypoint mission that this year was not quite as I had wanted.
Ian did you see anything about the times it was going to be closed as it just has the approach and take off times in that PDF but does not say how long its closed from - I guess it will be the same as before so maybe 10am till 5pm ?
Will look at booking half days off during them days in Jan / Feb - can only submit them in December though - ugh !
When they had the last closure, where did you all take off from ? I might have a wander up on the Skylink bus and go to the aero park if I get permission to fly during the closure.
Oh i took off all over and as i work at DHL i had great parking in front and then walked round to the main terminal so didnt have to pay parking etc
But aeropark too parked there and i think this time near the 27 runway side im gonna try!
The two viewing points and along the airport trails is where I went too last time plenty sky to fly in and keeping line of sight too.
I tried to do a full end-to-end runway flight using waypoints and moving along the trail but it didn’t quite go to plan. The missions were fine it was just how I had the camera pointed that was the issue. So time for a revisit.
So i have an update where we can n cant fly there is also a drone portal now * ill link it, but many users wont be happy eith this update as were not to fly close like we did only the outter perimeter:(
There are more rules in place aswell,
So where the red line is , anything in that CAN NOT FLY…
This is crazy Mike as basically if you go down the Airport Trail next to the fence you have like 2m maybe 3m across to fly in as you cant go over the logistic park at all - that being said no idea who the trail actually belongs too but I had no issues when I walked along it last time and flew from there.
No idea why you have to get permission to over fly the logisics park or the race track - if you take off from public land you should be able to fly if EMA say you can fly in the zone - they should not be looking after others concerns in this way other than to say yes you can fly in the zone but not over the Airport land and others land in that zone should only be a concern of airspace - feels a bit like an overreach to me and someone must have done something to get this to happen.
Kinda sad really as the team seemed so cool and chilled with us all at the start of the year.
Think someone in the EMA content team maybe got miffed we got better footage than they did (although i did have a guy messafe saying my content was flagged up for em) , but if nothing was wrong then i dont see a problem of us flying the building etc just not the apron.
Last time i remember going to ask the race track and he was on holiday then just stopped replying so could be tricky. Hopefully i can get a response to the follow up email!!
haha yeah the tower was a bad arse move on your part but as I read the rules and looked at the map and info they supplied and I think you did even get clarification you were on it and yeah, hats off mate kudos on that one but that was their fault not yours if it was wrong.
Overall from when I spoke to the cops on one day when some idiot did fly over a plane it seems we were all being safe / respectful so this has come as a bit of a shock and unless they can let us fly a bit closer to the runway / over AeroPark and the logistics area its a bit of a non event for me then - I get not over the taxi ways or buildings due to how it would be hard to maintain VLOS unless your in one of the parking area’s
Maybe a few of us need to email them to see if some agreement can be made to loosen up the requirements or for them to give us more context to why.
