I actually went very similar as @yith. I saw teh HDZero addon (but again not as impressed with the penetration yet). Flying bandos… DJI would be better for sure, and maybe I will have relent one day. I don’t hate DJI they done a lot for the consumer drone and the Mini got me into drones. Works well… The the GPS on DVR not available? That’s a show stopper for me (maybe the rooting, and open source community will sort that one day!) Also being able to watch other peoples feeds, and have multiple goggles, makes it more open. I like open source/supported too, a reason I chose ELRS too
I then looked and tried a few of the “stylish” goggles… Just didn’t feel right for me. OLED screens are nicer, but the price… eeeek… That’s why I went for the cobra’s. The image quality is excellent, most reviewers who HATE box goggles actually “really” liked em, they are actually smaller and lighter than the DJI HD goggle (that’s always a big argument against box…), if you wear glasses you just keep em on, and now I’m swapping with a flying buddy no adjustments to make. Plus the few hundred quid you can save… Well that’s a babyhawk! It is an expensive hobby, but will never likely never upgrade them, maybe an OLED screen version? heh…
But would I go DJI if I could justify the price… Quite possibly (but that GPS thing does stink a bit, coming from a guy who’s lost a drone on second outing…). And the reason for considering it… Penetration (not range), penetration through buildings…
We need another Digital system. Must be possible as DJI have already done it, and ELRS, amazing… HDZero has gained traction, but it’s not the quality as much people moan about, it’s the penetration, and HDZero doesn’t seem to give you that extra?
I would have bought into that by now if it’s for a good penetration improvement (can just plug the receiver in). I got a 1.6W VTX now… Not tested to it’s full potential yet, but doubt HDZero can do much better? Does look a lot nicer sure…
Absolutely Chris thats why I would recommend if you go the DJI route you dont upgrade the firmware past a certain point. The beauty of the DJI goggles is you dont have any Internet connection like on the drones via the fly app which force updates. You have to physically plug them into a PC to update them. From what I can tell its the FPV drone that they are trying to block the use of hacks on (like their other camera drones)
All is not lost with HDZero.
The VTX mostly just passes the data through. This means that improved cameras and improved VRX processing can actually fix the issues I see.
i.e. too much noise… why not just keep old pixels for a few cycles rather than putting ones with bad CRCs on top? You’ll get a slightly strange effect when losing signal, but still be able to see shit through it.
That would actually fix the penetration problem.
Cameras out of focus… slightly more detail… reduce frame rate… there’s no frame buffer so you literally can just reduce frame rate to increase the resolution…
It could be switched off and on. People could have a fast version and a slow version. Eventually they may realise that some people don’t care that much about latency. I’m thinking the long game here… a year, two… etc?
Because this is not DJI, someone else could buy the chips and make a version that does it.
Actually Orqua’s completely software version may even be the one to fill this hole.
@clinkadink In my humble opinion I would definitely go digital (either DJI or HDZero). Theyre both really popular high end systems so if you decided its not for you, you wont have any trouble selling them on.
Analogue is in decline and will eventually disappear. The quality with both systems is far superior to Analogue.
I would make a choice based on the style of flying you are likely to be doing. HDZero is fantastic for racing and long range (over 13km). Its also good for freestyle and probably its biggest selling point in my mind, you can fit it into small whoops which is extremely difficult with DJI.
DJI is the best for freestyle and cinematic style flying and also good for long range upto a max of 13km (although again this hard limit could potentially be removed via the root access hack at some point).
Ive had both systems and can tell you they are both great systems but each with its advantages and disadvantages. I chose to keep the DJI system as it best suits my flying needs but I would never tell anyone that HDZero is not a worthy contender. It all really depends on what and how you want to fly
Actually I missed one thing… DJI goggles don’t have HDMI input? Is that right?
£500 for a set of goggles that can only do DJI, which is sure the best right now, but might not be in the future or can do analog… but can’t do any other HD system…
From what I have read on their camera drones side, all newly bought products will have this ready installed. With no method to roll back. So I would assume the same would be true if I were to go out an buy the DJI FPV system today
I have my tango 2 display the gps. If the quad goes down, it flashes the last coordinates for you. Im sure elrs could do that. Easier than going through the osd
If you buy the fpv drone with goggles that could be the case but even that will take a small amount of time for DJI to implement. If you buy standalone goggles its less likely. Bardwell was saying on his live feed yesterday they expect it to take a few months before the goggles start shipping with the latest firmware
Interesting yes. I did add the GPS info onto a second page of my radio, I assume it’ll shown the last value it got if it crashed? Or there more to it in Edge/OpenTX?
Both systems have pros and cons and both are a leap forward from analogue.
Get to a meet where one or both of the systems can be tired and I can guarantee you will choose one.
I’d tried DJI HD with @milkmanchris & @speatuk and also tried the HDzeros with @notveryprettyboy.
Both were great but the dji was easier to buy for me and had a better picture.
Either way I was certain that digital was the way forward and I’m sure most will do the same.
