The site is named after the famous monument to the horse named 'Beware Chalk Pit'. It belonged to Paulet St John, the 3rd Earl of Bolingbroke. The horse carried its owner to a racing victory in 1734, just a year after it fell into a chalk pit during a fox-hunt.
The inscription on the plaque on the north wall reads:
"Underneath lies buried a horse, the property of Paulet St. John Esq, that in the month of September 1733 leaped into a chalk pit twenty-five feet deep a foxhunting with his master on his back and in October 1734 he won the Hunters Plate on Worthy Downs and was rode by his owner and was entered in the name of Beware Chalk Pit".
The all round views from the monument are impressive. The monument itself can be seen from far and wide, particularly when the sun reflects off the white walls.
The originator declared that this location was not inside a Flight Restriction Zone at the time of being flown on 01/10/2023. It remains the responsibility of any pilot to check for any changes before flying at the same location.
I’m scouting some locations to propose a SW meetup and wondering if Pitt Down just down the road from this monument would be a good location that’s easily accessible to Poole/Bournemouth/Southampton/Portsmouth/Salisbury (locations of highest concentrations of members in the Dorset/Wilt/Hants area according to members map I believe).
Yeh, likewise. I did a scout of the area on drone scene for air restrictions, the Hants gov website mentions kite flying at Pitt Down but no obvious air restrictions, I had a look at the Pitt Down sign using street view and the notice board doesn’t say anything against drones…
I think my big question right now is, is there enough open space that wouldn’t be in the way of dog walkers and the like? Hopefully find a local that knows the area and can answer that as I have to hire car to get anyway so bit of a faff to check it out myself
