First Da Vinci Video

So… I have just done my video. I have managed to get it done pretty quick as I have strung a series of shots together, used simple fade in and fade out, some cut and slow downs, and added an insert of music. It looks great in the software however I cannot see it being anywhere near as crisp and HD in Youtube. Or, there will be some form of “you can’t upload 4K” issue which I have not come across yet as this will be my first upload.

So far I am liking Da Vinci - however the video transition effects are odd. I used or tried to use a few and they didn’t seem to do anything? I left them in the media so will see if anything obvious on upload but generally fade seemed to work well. It is rendering and will take some time to upload to youtube, but I will past a link beneath when it is done. 9 minutes to render the 2 min 40 sec video but I am happy to wait if the quality matches that in the player.

I suspect the youtube upload will be 20 mins odd. We are off out shortly so will have to post later on once we are back and it is uploaded but it will be below

Thanks for all the help so far - really appreciated. Oh this was my first time flying over water too which was interesting!

2 hours 40 minutes upload to Youtube… erm…

Best things in life are worth the wait.

I think I know the transition issue - I’ll do some notes for you.

What’s the 5G signal like on your phone?

If you’ve got several hundred mb of upstream on 5G it’d be worth hotspotting for large uploads

The point where you want the transition cant be the very ends of the clips either side (as they will be if you just dragged them to the timeline). There needs to be hidden frames to be used for the transition.
The logic here is that the timeline remains a fixed length so that, for instance, the clips don’t move relative to a sound track … or clips on another tracks … as you apply the transition.

So - if the first clip is using the last frame, and the second clip is using the first frame … you need to create some hidden clips.

eg: if you have two clips like this …

… you need to hover the selection tool over the end of the clip to get the trim tool to appear …

… then drag to shorten the clip. The new length of the clip and the amount of the trim will display …

… trimmed by 20 frames down to 25 secs 23 frames in that screenshot.

That means that you have 20 frames available for transition.

Do similar on the second clip

Click on the space (if goes grey) …

… and hit delete. The shortened clips move adjacent to each other.

Now, if you drag your transition over that point, you see two things.
In this example, you can see the transition being applied is the Cross Disolve and the amount of each clip being transitioned.

.

The amount transitioned will be the smaller of the default set for transitions (in your preferences) or the amount of each (hidden) clip that you’ve created that’s available for transtion.

There are methods to achieve this automatically (that will make things move relative to audio and other tracks) - but I thought the detailed step by step method would explain what’s needed, and what’s happening, more clearly.

Goodness thanks for your efforts on that. It makes sense so I will play about with transitions next time I use it. The tutorial video did the drag and drop onto the middle part between clips, however I found that I actually placed the transition at the end of clip 1, and at the start of clip 2, so I can see there are various ways to do it.

The video is at 50% upload showing 1 hour 20 mins left. I selected the highest quality, 2160 Ultra HD I think so I wonder whether this has caused the wait. Is 4K 2160? I could have used 1080P or the next one down which wasn’t the highest quality. But I am fascinated to see how it comes out. The short video looked really good in the software.

4k, by default, is 3840 x 2160

Most people rarely use a clip from end to end … so 99% of the time there will already be more than enough hidden frames to do just that.

75%! If I did a 10 minute video it would take 10 hours at this rate. Whereabouts are you based? If you were local I would be intrigued to see how you do things on the editor.

 Achieved with your support

Some great colours there! :+1:

@Pirbright_Drone jay I couldn’t help but notice your dj setup avatar on YouTube ( not going off topic in this thread )

If you fancy chatting music / mixing sometime over here :+1:

Oh nice one, thanks

Agree with Ozone Vibe, it has been really difficult until today to get any decent autumn colour with the never ending gloom, you did a good job!

Shouldn’t have taken that long. There are render settings that are specific to Youtube and rate of transfer that may help.

The video was good but may I suggest you use Optical Flow and Standard better in the inspector if you are slowing a clip down ie from its 30fps timeline settings rate to 24fps (or slower). This will assist in smoothing out the footage, although sometimes it promotes unwanted artifacts.

There are loads of tutorials on Davinci in YouTube, but I find this guy keeps it simple and is easy to understand:

I always use the upload direct to YouTube option on DaVinci. Uploads fairly quickly now on V19 ( I started using it when it was V15 and uploads were painfully slow)

There are a few reasons I do it in two steps …

  • If the colour grading, and other aspects, of the edit are significant, my old laptop won’t always replay the overall result in perfect real-time (unless the resolution is reduced - and not always then with NR and other neural effects), so it’s possible to miss noticing some “issues” when replaying in DR. Reviewing a render is far more reliable for checking all aspects of an edit.
  • I upload to more than one YT account - and I’m always worried about uploading to the wrong account.
  • Indeed, my laptop is always logged out of all aspects of Google for two reasons :
    – The above
    – Google already collects more info about me than I’d like - this minimises what they learn. :crossed_fingers:

Thanks for the tips above - optical flow and standard? I presume you were on about the final aerial right turn at the end over the trees as it comes to a close? I did slow that down mid clip, and I also did notice the footage wasn’t smooth. So when I slow the speed - are these tick boxes or settings that I can play with?

In terms of upload I will certainly do a direct to YT video as an experiment however I do like to both check the video back as Ozone states and also keep a file in my own folder to use / refer to later.

Even if you upload directly to YouTube, it automatically keeps the edited video file on your computer. ( just try and remember where it saves it ):wink:

It does - but if what’s uploaded is a tad wrong and published before you realise - you’ve just published something you wish you hadn’t.

You don’t have to remember. Right-click the render job and select …

… it opens Windows Explorer (or Mac equivalent) with the file selected.
